Drone Delivery: Where do you Draw the Line

Drone deliveries are becoming more and more common. With newer breakthroughs and features added regularly to drones, delivery is an inevitable task. Through features such as vertical takeoff and landing, a drone arriving at your door with a package is not a big deal. With the rise in popularity of online stores, getting an item is one click away. As soon as you hit ‘purchase’, you can bet a drone would fly to your door in the next day or two. This cuts the waiting period immensely – something that is a good selling point for online shops.

Weight Limitations

Of course, with progress often come obstacles. Drone delivery for instance has met a number of resistance through the years. First, you have to consider the item’s weight. Delivery drones can only hold smaller objects, often less than 3 kilograms. This severely limits what a drone can and cannot deliver to your doorstep. For heavier items, you have to rely on methods that are more traditional. These include delivery trucks and couriers. Of course, with these methods, waiting time goes up drastically.

Delivery: A Matter of Trust

Another issue is trust. A survey last year however still showed a lot of trust issues surrounding drones. A majority of users may try drone delivery, but not with more expensive items. These may include mobile phones, jewelry, or other gadget bought online. Some do not even trust a drone enough to deliver any of the packages they order. Drones can get lost along the way. A package may be stolen, or delivered in the wrong area. Without any actual person delivering your package and confirming afterwards, trust is at an all-time concern. Would you risk your package for a faster delivery time? Or would you rather wait a while longer and leave it at the hands of veteran carriers?

So that leaves the question: where do you draw the line when it comes to drone delivery?
