Long ago, IBM addressed high overheads in its marvelously complex MVS operating system by implementing a “True Ready Queue” for scheduling only In and Ready tasks for dispatching. However, Linux kernel development looks to be catching up in scalability rather quickly. About six months ago, a couple of patches were proposed to reduce Linux kernel latency.
