Ultimate Virtual Reality Simulator – Cable Robot Simulator

I’ve never experienced any of the Virtual Reality technologies that are currently available but that’s because I don’t want to ruin my first experience with something that’s mediocre. Virtual reality headsets can trick your eyes and ear into believing you are in a specific environment but giving your body the same experience in terms of motion and other factors is a bit more difficult. This is where the Cable Robot Simulator comes into play.

In the past, companies have tried to create a “complete” virtual reality experience by using omnidirectional treadmills or even spinning chairs which is fine and adds another element to the experience but probably nothing like the experience the Cable Robot Simulator is able to provide. The Cable Robot Simulator is developed at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics. What makes this a unique system is the carbon fiber cage. A player will wear a wireless VR headset inside the carbon fiber cage which is then suspended in mid-air and thrown around the room using a total of eight steel cables.

The cage is able to tilt, bank, and move with an acceleration of up to 1.5g in response to what’s happening in the Virtual Reality experience. Researchers have already shown off some of the basic flight and racing simulations. I’m already picturing myself in a fighter jet performing at an air show or perhaps racing a motorcycle on the track.

The Cable Robot Simulator is still a prototype and I’m pretty sure your wife would have an issue with installing something like this in the home…if you could manage to fit it. Either way, I’m looking forward to the progress of this project.
