New Short Film on Sentient Drone That Doesn’t Want to Eradicate Humanity

Donny the Drone, a new film by Mackenzie Sheppard, is all about a drone that becomes self-aware. Donny is voiced by Guy Pearce, and attempts to be a bridge between humanity and machines, though not everyone appreciates or trusts his actions.
Donny the Drone is set in 2022, after Donny collides with a bird and becomes sentient. Donny is awarded with a “Person of the Year” award, starting the film off with a bizarre sense of uncertainty. Donny considers himself transformed, and tries to become an ambassador between two very different worlds; while his award suggests that many feel that Donny’s intentions are genuine, and the age-old fear of technology taking over and enslaving humanity becomes very real.
This is not the first movie to explore the idea of self-aware machines posing a threat to humanity, but Donny the Drone is an interesting addition to the body of work. The choice of Guy Pearce to voice Donny also particularly fitting, considering his work in sci-fi—he has been seen in Prometheus and other films, so he will be a familiar voice for many.
