Enter the World of Mind-Controlled Drone Racing

The future is now. In what looks like something taken straight from a science fiction novel, students can now control drones with their minds. And while in a story, this sounds like the start of something sinister (mind-controlling supervillain, anyone?) the reality is somewhat unexpected. Students use these mind-controlled drones for racing against each other. Pocket-sized drones compete against one another as students try to outmaneuver their opponents without holding anything for controls.

Mind Controlled Drones

These Brain-Drone racing events may soon come to a school near you, as the sport is gaining a ton of momentum. At the moment, these competitions host a number of representatives from countries all over the globe.

Currently, these drones run through courses while students wear EEGs (electroencephalographs) on their heads. These devices, light enough that you will not even notice them, take your brain signal and convert it to action. In this scenario, drone action. Forget about manually controlling drones via remotes. The days of complex flying with multiple buttons and joysticks are behind us. Now, all you have to do is think and it shall happen.

Practicing Mind Control

Of course, it is not as simple as putting on the helmet and starting controls. Drone mind control, similar to its fictional counterparts, requires a bit of practice. Users polish their mind-controlling skills through repetition – similar to any other skill. They wear their EEGs and try to ‘tell’ their drone to take a specific action. With enough practice (and the proper equipment), they can control drones with but a simple thought crossing their minds.

Where to Start

People interested in these mind-drone races can only spectate to start with. It is not as simple as it may seem, at it requires dedication and patience from the person. However, once you see these flying beasts in action, you will no doubt want to try it for yourself.

Check out local universities in your area and see if they host events like drone racing!
