Why make a bowling ball mortar?
It’s pretty self-explanatory, the cannon shoots bowling balls. They call it a ‘mortar’ because of the high angled trajectory. The Bowling Ball Mortar Cannon is capable of launching a 15-pound bowling ball up to a mile with only three-ounces of cannon powder. I’m not exactly sure if ‘cannon powder’ differs from ‘black powder’. The cannons are legal in the United States. I’m not too sure how the Canadian or European governments would feel about these “toys”.
The Bowling Ball Mortar Cannon weighs in at 82-pounds and features a 20″ barrel. The outside diameter of the barrel is 9.25-inches and inside diameter is 8.75-inches. The powder chamber measures in 2″ x 2″ and the maximum powder charge is 3.5oz. The ball hang time and range will vary depending on angle, weight of the ball, powder charge, and even weather.
