You’re probably wondering what the most frequently downloaded apps are these days, so we checked into the latest statistics on your behalf. Those of you who develop mobile apps know there’s big money to be made (read below–who’d believe how much money an independent developer, @SimonFilip, can make!) as the mobile web continues to expand in flat design glory.
Thusfar, the top five best Android apps of 2014 look a bit like Facebook, according to Distimo, an analytics firm that tallies the most frequently downloaded apps. Father Facebook continues to take the lead as the offspring of Facebook, including Facebook Messenger and Instagram, join as most often downloaded apps on Google Play (Android).
What’s almost astounding is that Facebook will soon complete its purchase of WhatsApp, the fourth most popular Android app on Google Play! (The odds of pick a download, any download, preference look good for Facebook! Ever-popular Skype, owned by Microsoft, brought up the top-five rear as a favorite, free Android app….

Apple iOS Apps
Mobile 2048 is at the top of iOS users’ preferred apps taking over the lead from free download Piano Tiles. YouTube, TrialsFrontier, and Boom Beach continue to vie for top spots. The number slider game known as Ketchapp is getting some attention because it’s rather similar to Threes, a competitor. Since people of all ages love to play Bingo, even if they don’t admit it, free Bingo apps like Cheeky Bingo are always popular, too.
Mojang Minecraft continues as a popular app on Apple App Store and Google Play (Apple). The long-popular app was first launched in 2011 and represented twenty-five percent of Mojang’s sales (more than $80 million of the company’s $322 million last year). It’s one of the most popular downloads for new smartphones or tablet users: twenty-one million people can’t be wrong!
Monument Valley (ustwo) is also perennially popular on iOS as well as Warner Bros. Heads Up! – Gameloft The Amazing Spider-Man Two – and Afterlight by indie developer Simon Filip.

Money and its owners parted as Poweramp Full Version Unlocker – Titanium Backup PRO Key – Nova Launcher (Prime) – and SwiftKey Keyboard made their way onto Apple iPhones and iPads.
Biggest Money-Maker Apps
Top-seller Clash of Clans by Supercell (the highest revenues for Anroid and iOS platforms) continues to amaze app industry developers and sellers. The firm $892 million last year! Boom Beach (also by Supercell) was fifth most lucrative in its first month of sales.
GungHo Online sold $1.5 billion in 2013 with Pizza & Dragons making almost $800 million (Android) and $650 million (iOS). King (Candy Crush Saga) continue to sell well: the business made almost $1.9 billion last year!
There seems to be a great advantage to creating a free app that catches on with folks as they commute to work or wait for their annual performance review at the office.
