The Rise of Digital Gambling in Finland

Finns have always been enthusiastic gamblers. In fact, Finland has been holding the monopoly on casinos in the whole country for over 70 years. Imagine that, seven whole decades. Nowadays, however, you are unlikely to stumble upon a thriving casino or gambling den while strolling around the country. With the rise of technology, online casinos have risen along with it.

Online casinos have an appealing hook. The temptation of logging in on a digital server, topping up some cash, and playing as much as you want as long as you want while wearing either a fancy suit or tattered underwear is far too strong. Despite the fact that Finland has made it illegal for Finns to access international gambling sites, there are literally hundreds of local online casinos to compensate for it. Maybe, overcompensate is the right term.

All these online casino talk makes one curious. So, here are some online casino habits in Finland and some lessons we can learn from them.

Playing alone

When it comes to gambling, it’s nice to have a few friends when playing card games like poker, blackjack, and the like. This doesn’t really apply to online casinos. As tempting as it is to boast about hitting a jackpot or winning big, most Finns prefer to gamble their money in the security of solitude. It is possibly due to the fact that online casinos are very accessible. Just open your device, log in, then gamble your fortune away.

In addition to that, playing alone also provides the player some sense of privacy. Although there’s a chance of earning some fast cash in these digital game hubs, the opposite also exists. Parading your losses to anybody is not as tempting as its counterpart. That’s when the luxury of privacy kicks in. Winning or losing, a player can either celebrate or mope about it all on his own.

Playing by yourself could be the perfect setup as long as you exercise self-discipline. Online casinos make gambling accessible for everyone. This entails that the possibility of overspending is high. After losing all your money that you’ve cashed in, it is far too easy to top up and spend beyond your budget. If you can promise yourself that you will not go overboard, then hit those slots!

Wanting to earn fast money

Just like any gambler, Finns who gamble through online casinos only have one thing in mind–winning. After all, nobody plays to lose. The primary reason a player gets his card, bets some money, and plays games is the hopes of earning more. Of course, hitting a jackpot is every gamblers’ unspoken dream.

However, there is a huge downside to this. Some Finns have confessed to this habit of wanting fast cash. When they lost, they simply topped up more hoping to win back some of their losses. After losing some more, they make another top-up. Then, another one, until it turns into a vicious cycle.

Gambling is not the pot at the end of a rainbow. It won’t provide food on your table nor will it pay your bills. It is easy to say that this draw is the final draw. Especially if that draw turns out to be a win.

In gambling, winning is not necessarily always a good thing. Sometimes winning is the starting point of the cycle. The only way to stop the cycle is to either lose all your funds or stop altogether. We all know how hard the latter could be. Hence, going back to the first point, exercise self-discipline. Once you tell yourself that that would be the last game, make sure that that really is your last game. If you lose, too bad. If you win, yay! Now, put that credit card back where it belongs.

When boredom strikes, hit the slots!

Boredom sucks. Being placed in house arrest because of some viral outbreak can drive anybody insane. This is the perfect time to start with gambling. Probably, why some of you are entertaining this article. For some Finns, however, this supposed past time has somehow become an addiction.

The urge to play has become too strong, and has corrupted the mind. From telling yourself “one more,” it becomes a never ending spiral called gambling addiction.

Gambling is fun. Again, it’s exhilarating to see that congratulatory announcement flashing on your screen. Indeed, gambling could be something to ease your boredom. However, there is a very thin line between entertainment and addiction. Remind yourself to tread this fine line carefully. Keep in mind that once you enter the sinkhole, it is a long tough battle to get back up.

Gambling is fun, and it should always be fun. If it doesn’t, that means you’re doing something wrong. Look back and reflect. Make sure that you’re the one controlling the slots, and not the other way around. Discipline yourself, then have your fun. Happy gambling!
