We do so much digitally these days that it is hard to imagine a time when you would want to use sheets of paper, but the truth is that there are a lot of occasions when printing things out comes in handy – printing paper boarding passes, maps, driving directions and EventBrite tickets is handy, even if you would normally use apps on your iOS or Android phone for that sort of thing.
Printing is also handy for sharing information with people that are a little less geeky than you – while you might have a bluetooth and NFC capable phone, and be able to read NFC business cards, there’s still a large percentage of the population that have feature phones, and who won’t be able to quickly swipe and save your information, or even add you on Facebook all that easily – so why not print your Facebook Messenger image so that those people can scan the QR code and use it to communicate with you at a later date.
Even standard InkJet printers are good enough these days to use for printing business cards and small flyers, so you don’t have to spend a lot of money on getting them printed elsewhere.
Printers can be a fun gadget to play with too. The days of them being awkward to configure and irritating to use are long gone – now you can just plug them in to a USB port on your computer (or connect them up with a network cable), and you’re good to go – in fact, some printers are wireless, so you can connect any device – even your phone – to them by WiFi and print out documents no matter where you are in the house.
Owning a printer is painless now -HP even offers an ‘ink subscription’, where your printer will order new ink for you automatically, at a discounted price, when it detects that it is running low. This means that you don’t have to worry about finding the time to go to the shops, you can just use your printer as normal and get cartridges delivered when you need them. It’s efficient, easy, and cheaper than buying them as one-offs.
There are so many different types of printer to choose from these days – from laser printers and inkjets to all-in ones that feature printers, scanners and even fax machines, and dedicated photo-printers that have the ability to print from a camera or a memory stick directly. Simple printers may seem a little boring, but these more sophisticated devices are a joy to use and can make your life easier – at the end of the day, what sets geeks apart from others is the tech that we have, and the way that we use it – smart – not just for the sake of it being technology, but because it works well, and it serves a useful purpose to make your life better in some way.
