Hosting a party can be a blast but, let’s face it—it’s also a lot of pressure. No one wants to throw a dud so, if you’ve got an upcoming soiree, it’s time to get planning. There are plenty of things you can do to take your shindig from a certain snooze to an affair to remember, and it’s not always about providing more booze and food. In fact, there’s a lot to be said for adding some great gadgets. Need some celebration inspo? Read on for six pieces of technology that will liven up a party.
1. Music is a Must
Have you ever thrown a party and nailed every detail, only to realize later that you forgot to play your party playlist that you planned for the previous month? There’s nothing worse. The reason we hate that is we all know that music does a lot to make a fete more festive. Whether you have it as a background accompaniment or have it blasting in hopes people will hit the dance floor, music really can make or break a party. So make your music a priority. If you think you’ll get too busy with other party-hosting endeavors, hire a DJ, a band, or assign someone you know to handle it for you.
2. Visuals for Some Va Va Voom
There are some things that just take events up a notch or ten—one of them being an audio visualizer. We’ve already discussed the importance of music in making parties memorable, and this goes hand in hand with that. Abstract geometric patterns that dance and spin in time with the audio volume and frequency add an element that will keep people talking about your party for months—if not years—to come.
3. A Karaoke Machine
We’re just going to come right out and say it. If you are serving booze at your party, a karaoke machine is always a good idea. Once the people get up a bit of liquid courage, it’s on like Karaoke Kong. Whether you leave it up to your guests and do it in a more l’aissez faire fashion or you hire someone to actually run this, adding karaoke to a party is always good for a lot of giggles.
4. Party Pix, Please
There’s just something about having a photo booth at your party that brings out your guests’ inner hams. Hiring someone with a booth is great, as they usually come with a ton of costumes, glasses, wigs, and other fun items for those who love to cosplay to don. However, if you think you’re already spending too much on other things like food and beverages, you can create an amazing photo booth on your own. As this HGTV article notes, all you’ll need is a camera tripod, a digital point-and-shoot camera, a colorful backdrop of your choosing, an optional lighting umbrella, and remote shutter release. You’ve saved the pennies but still gained all those positive party points.
5. Slideshows are No Sideshow
Why do we leave these only for weddings? They are always a hit, as everyone loves to “ooh” and “ahh” over photos of the bride and groom from the early days straight through to the big day. But they can be just as much fun at your next party, particularly if you’ve known this crew for a long time. In this case, funny photos surely won’t be in short supply. A slideshow is particularly perfect for special occasions, like a 40th birthday party. If you’re doing something like this, just remember to ask for photos in advance so you have a nice array from each guest.
6. Magic Sans the Magic Mike
Magic is having a moment and, although it’s not necessarily thought of as technical, per se, some of the tricks can actually be amazing digitally created feats. Consider hiring someone to put on a show, as this will be super fun getting the guests involved. If you want to keep it more informal, have this person float from room to room at your party in order to wow your guests. Some think magic is just for kids but, if you’ve ever seen one of the bigger shows in Las Vegas, you know that this is anything but true. If you’re not up for magic but you’ve got a virtual reality setup, invite guests to give your alternate world a whirl. Just be warned—it might be tough to get them to leave.
Serving the right food and drinks can do a lot for a party, but add in any of these technical components and your party will go from drab to fab in no time flat.
