Canada Con: Top Three Canadian Conventions According To JustFly

Canada is full of nerds. With many films, television shows, and documentaries filmed across Canada thanks to lower filming costs and generous government tax credits, it potentially makes it a bit easier for the stars of the greater nerd genre to come out for Canadian conventions and events. While there are dozens of conventions across Canada, I was looking for a definitive list of the best ones in the country. To get this list I spoke with JustFly, an online travel company. They dug deep and picked three of their best reviewed conventions in the Great White North and gave a quick look at what to expect this year in terms of high profile guests.

Montreal Comiccon

Taking place in July, Montreal Comiccon is the largest convention in the city of Montreal and is held conveniently near the city’s Old Port district. Held at Palais De Congres, this year’s convention will feature Billy Dee Williams (Star Wars), Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek), Ric Flair (Former Wrestler), and William Shatner (Star Trek). According to JustFly’s review this event features amazing cosplay, but they recommend a quick scan of the rules regarding costumes and weapons before heading out.

Ottawa Geek Market

A much smaller event, The Ottawa Geek Market is more or less a massive swap meet for nerds. Taking place twice a year in Canada’s capital city of Ottawa, this event brings people together to peddle their wares and of course talk shop in regards to comics, video games, and other forms of media.

FanExpo Toronto

Easily the most famous and largest nerd-culture convention in Canada. FanExpo often features dozens of well-regarded quests, huge panels, and a huge show floor ripe for exploring. Taking place in September around Labour Day weekend, FanExpo calls the massive Metro Toronto Convention Centre home. This year’s FanExpo has a stacked guest list, featuring Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Ghostbusters), William Shatner (Star Trek), Stan Lee (Marvel Comics), Kevin Smith (Filmmaker), and Jack Gleeson (Game Of Thrones).
