iPhone Dev-Team Jailbreaks iPhone 3.1.2

jailbreak-iphone-3g-os-3.1.2Well, well… Dev-Team has done it again.  Even a virgin 3.1.2 iPhone can now be jailbroken.  This just shortly after rumors Apple will soon release new hardware that is “un-jailbreakable”.

Version 3.1.4 of PwnageTool supports the 3.1.2 release of the iPhone software for iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and iPod Touch 1G/2G.

Caution:  Please head over to the dev-team blog, read and then re-read the instructions and warning before upgrading.

iPhone 3.1.2 Update

Apple released another patch/upgrade for the iPhone today.  Version 3.1.2 of the iPhone OS is reported to fix a few issues:

  • Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep
  • Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart
  • Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming

Those of you that run your phones jailbroken and unlocked will need to wait a while before upgrading.  The Dev-Team posted the following warning on their blog:

WARNING! At 10.20AM PDT on October 8th 2009 Apple released the 3.1.2 version (7D11) of the iPhoneOS.

If you care about your jailbreak and unlock, don’t update your device - 3G and 3G(S) owners should pay particular attention to this warning.

  • PwnageTool and redsn0w are not yet compatible with 3.1.2
  • There is no estimated release time for compatible tools (please don’t bug us about this).
  • Any information we have regarding this update will be posted here.

We’ll keep you posted as new information comes around.

Looks like Saurik is working some new magicks for Jailbroken iPhones.  Just after the 3.0.1 release yesterday, Cydia was updated with a message stating:

iPhone 3g 3.0.1 JailbreakUsers of 3.0 who are willing to wait for 3.0.1 may wish to wait a while longer ;P

(saurk is working on something that is going to make the upgrade process a lot simpler for people who are already using jailbroken devices.  Note that by “a while” I mean “a week”, not “mere hours from now, so check quickly and rapidly” ;P .)

No more details will be given for now.

The Apple iPhone upgrade process for minor upgrades has never made much sense to me.  It seems the 3.0.1 upgrade is right around the 300mb mark, and I’m guessing a patch could be created thats significantly smaller.  Perhaps Saurik has devised a way to diff the 3.0 vs. 3.0.1 and just patch up the few files that have changed?

Looking forward to seeing what he’s come up with.
