No more DVI for HDTVs by 2008

DailyTech's got a blurb up about the fact that the Consumer Electronics industry will be moving away from DVI connections in HDTV's by 2008.  I understand where this movement stems from (read: DRM); however, guess who's losing out here? Our readers.

The best way to connect a PC to an HDTV is through a digital interface, namely, DVI. Unless we start seeing major vendors supplying their graphics cards with DVI > HDMI adapters, every PC enthusiast out there is going to have to shell out an additional $30-$40 for an adapter.

Now, I'm no industry analyst, but I'd say that there is a large percentage of current HDTV owners who are also PC enthusiasts. I'd say that a majority of the HDTV customer base is currently made up of early adopters; people who are familiar with, & likely have built their home theater system on digital interconnects.  This move away from DVI will certainly not be a deterrant, but rather, an annoyance. I'd think it'd definitely be enough of an annoyance to register in the internet community down the road; but it will very likely matter little in the long run.

I just hope we start seeing DVI > HDMI (or UDI?) adapters bundled with video cards much like we're seeing the VGA > DVI adapters today.
