Sun's 9.6GHz 8-core servers now available

If you've been waiting for Sun to release its Niagra-powered servers, & have a few thousand to blow, it seems you'll be able to pick up a SunFire T2000 sometime today. If your budget is a bit more modest, however; you'll have to wait a bit for the cheaper T1000 to hit the market. Sun released the UltraSparc T1 processor, formerly code-named Niagra, last month. MMMmmmmm.... 8-core processor goodness...

"Sun insists on giving the Niagara-powered servers a 9.6GHz clock speed, a reference to the eight-core implementation, with each core running at 1.2GHz. The eight-core version is able to process 32 different tasks simultaneously, since each core can handle four software threads, according to Anil Gadre, executive vice president and chief marketing officer at Sun."
