"Back during the time when the Celts practiced their pagan religion rite of summer's end and winter's beginning (called Samhain), they believed that it was a night where the thin veil that seperates the living from the dead was lifted. Some thought that the spirits would roam the countryside at night in search of bodies and/or homes to possess for the next year."
