So, you're looking for high capacity MP3 player but you don't wanna shell out for an iPod?  The SongBank from MediaGear might just satisfy your need for storage without burning up your wallet.
The MediaGear SongBank

We've been playing with one of these media players for a couple of weeks and found it interesting enough give it an in depth write-up.  We'll walk you through the build, run it through it's paces and give you all the pros and cons.

The SongBank hard drive enclosure allows you to use any 2.5" laptop drive to build your own MP3 player and external storage device.

Features:

  • Decode: MP3/WMA format
  • Encode: MP3 (64,128bps) format
  • External voice recording (DVR) of high sensitivity including line-in and FM live record
  • LCD: EL backlight large-scale dot matrix display (160 x 240 dots)

  • User-defined music library and playlist playback
  • 16MB anti-shock buffer for better power consumption
  • Rechargeable through either (1) AC/DC adapter (2) USB A-Type to mini USB cable

The package comes with everything you need to get the job done - just tear up that busted old laptop that you've got hanging out in the closet (or pick up a 40 gig drive from your favorite surplus supplier), grab a precision screw driver set, and your ready to go.

Putting the unit together hardly requires much skill - if you can read simple directions and use a screwdriver, you're pretty much golden.
