What is GoogleX?

Lots of blog chat everywhere about "GoogleX" - What is it?  Well, this blog post by Google software engineer Chikai Ohazama makes it sound like a fun late night experiment in DHTML and Javascript.  But why did google pull it from Google Labs almost as quickly as they put it up?  Is this the future direction of Google or did Apple have a fit? Personally, I've always been a big fan of the OSX interface, and frankly I'd love to see some UI improvments over at the big [G]. You can see an archive of  GoogleX out right here.
