I thought this urban ledgend was "busted" - I guess no one bothered to
tell State Sen. Andrea Stillman (D). It seems Senator Stillman
believes that "It is a known, documented fact that using a cell phone in proximity of
the gas pump can cause an electrical charge that can cause a fire that
can ignite the pump". In fact, there is no documented proof of this ever happening - not that I can find anyway. On the other hand, many, including the Discovery Channels popular "Myth Busters", have found no truth to this urban ledgend. Am I wrong to be worried that a Senator is pushing legislation based on urban legend? Maybe we can all send her an email and set her straight. Update: We've sent off an inquery to Senator Stillman and are looking forward to her response. We'll keep you up to date. |
