CXG: t-minus one month & counting...
Monday, 01 December 2003
With just over a month to go till kick-off, & the Christmas & New Year's holidays looming in-between, hundreds of teams from six of the most popular online games are gearing up to win big, & I mean big. The Cyber X Games main event will begin in Las Vegas, NV on January 8th, 2004. All this month, teams from all over the world are competing in regional qualifying events to see if they have what it takes to go to Vegas, baby & compete for the big, BIG bux. Sponsored by such companies as AMD, ATi, & Sennheiser, this year's event promises to bring the best of the best in online gaming to Vegas to compete for.... are you ready for this? $600,000 big ones....

So far, in the U.S., there have been three regional qualifying events: Chicago, Dallas, & New York. Throughout this week, the final two U.S. qualifying events will take place in the Los Angeles & Miami regions. There has already been a European qualifier in Sweden last October, & there will be two more international qualifiers in Canada & Greece before the main event in Las Vegas. The main event will be held in Vegas at the CES/Las Vegas Convention Center, & will last from January 8th-11th.

There will be a total of six games at the main event, each with their own allotment of the prize money. The breakdown on the games:

  1. Counter Strike: seven levels of prize money totalling $159,000. First place team receives $100,000.
  2. UT2K3: six levels of prize money totalling $27,000. First place team receives $15,000.
  3. RtCW: six levels of prize money totalling $45,500. First place team receives $25,000.
  4. Quake3: three levels of prize money totalling $20,000. First place receives $10,000.
  5. Warcraft III: three levels of prize money totalling $25,000. First place receives $10,000.
  6. America's Army: prize fund to be established at the main event

There will also be a BYOC event with a total of $100,000 in prizes to give away, as well as miscellaneous vendor/sponsor giveaways throughout the event. SO, if you & your team think they've got what it takes to compete & win it all, you'd better either live near L.A. or Miami, or be buying your plane ticket to those cities soon, because the time to qualify is quickly drawing to a close. This will certainly be an event to rival QCon in its magnitude, & it will definitely be bringing the best of the best to the table in Vegas. CXG will not be one of those things that happens in Vegas & stays in Vegas ;)
