ATi unveils 3D gaming chip for mobile phones
Wednesday, 07 January 2004

Looks like those crazy canucks are at it again. They've certainly taken the graphics market by storm over the last year, haven't they? I really would like to believe that what they're saying about gaming on phones is true (think of the time you could waste on the train), I'm going to have to file this in the "I'll believe it when I see it" category.

IMAGEON 2300 includes the following:

  • Advanced 2D and 3D graphics;
  • MPEG 4 decode with real-time video playback at 30-fps and low power consumption;
  • Video Capture Ports with support for high resolution camera sensors (1.3M and 2M pixels);
  • JPEG CODEC to compress and decompress images to be either saved in memory and printed or shared wirelessly by the camera phone user; and,
  • Many other features such as two display engines (primary and sub-display) and embedded frame buffer.
The Canadian company says that the chipset is currently sampling, & that mass shipments should begin later this quarter. The chip will apparently also be on display at ATi's booth at CES.
