Gamespy.com has a article up on the hardware of the Playstation 3, at least in speculation. The short jist of the article implies the Playstation 3's core will "be able to perform in excess of one trillion mathematical calculations a second. Put into perspective, that makes it approximately 100 times more powerful than a 2.5 GHz Pentium 4 CPU!" Now, they're saying this core is going to have multiprocessors which makes this power feesible, but this cpu bunching is not going to be from our friends at Intel like the Xbox's is. The core is most likely going to be made by either IBM, Sony, or Toshiba, who have reportedly pledged 400 million to the development of the Playstation 3. There was also a small blurb on Rambus providing the RAM for the system. Whether you love or hate this company for it's self titled RDRAM, Rambus certainly makes high end memory which should compliment the bandwidth needs of the multiprocessor core Sony is talking about. |
