Mozilla has announced that they're developing a competitor to AIR and Silverlight, but that it won't do exactly the same thing. Prism will allow web apps to run right on the desktop, without the need for a web browser. There's only a prototype working currently, & only for Windows, but I'd guess that will change soon enough.
