| Reports are circulating today that Barcelona, AMDs quad-core server chip, will begin shipping in August, albeit at the lower range of the frequency spectrum. These chips will likely be their 01 stepping variety, which produced poor yields, & topped-out at 2GHz. The 02 stepping chips should be able to get to 2.5GHz, & are expected to ship in time for the holidays. Meanwhile, AMD has refuted claims that the launch date of the desktop version of these chips, the Phenom, had slipped to Q1 '08. Here's hoping they make it by year's end. Competition is a good thing. |
