China to set up base on the moon
Tuesday, 21 May 2002

It's about damn time someone decided to attempt a moon landing again (after all, wasn't the original a fake? ).  China has laid out a 3 step 5 year plan to get them there.  1) Get an astronaut into space.  2) setup a space labratory.  3) build a space station.  All of this leading to the eventual trip to the moon to set up a base to mine the moon's mineral riches "for the benefit of humanity".  If successful, China will join the elite ranks of the few counties who have managed to launch a person into space (the U.S. and the former Soviet Union being the only other ones).

You can find all the dirty details here.

XOXIDE ENLIGHT BREEZE PREMODIFIED CASE REVIEW @ Tweaknews.net
Tuesday, 21 May 2002
Article Snippit:

"When it comes to modifying your computer case today, a great amount of time and hard work is needed. Some people just like to pull out their trusty dremel tool and hack away at there computer case and install various modifications like side windows, blowhole exhausts, etc. On the other hand we have the other computer crowd that like the look of a unique, modified computer, but just do not have the time or the handiness to go about a modification by themselves. In this situation, the only way for them to get a nice computer case is to have a friend do the work for them or buy a modified computer case from a company like Xoxide."

Copyright Protected CDs Cracked - With Magic Markers?
Written by Benjamin A. Hunter
Tuesday, 21 May 2002
Just when you thought copyright protected CDs would be the end of playing your favorite tunes on your PC, someone proves the technology can be cracked.  In this case, an extremely low tech method was used that no one would've considered.  Would you believe a felt tip marker?  When you take it and black out the edge of the CD, where most copyright protection code resides, it allows an otherwise copy protected CD to be removed from it, giving the user the ability to burn other copies and play it on their PC or in their car's CD player.

According to this article, Internet groups have been circulating the discovery for the past week now.  In this case, it was one of Sony Music's copy protected technology that was cracked.  Does this mean they need to go back to the drawing board and consider felt tip markers as a means of removing copy protection?  Or will they ban markers like one post on alt.music.princ suggests?  When we find out, we'll make sure to bring it here to you.  =)

E-Mail Threat
Written by Benjamin A. Hunter
Tuesday, 21 May 2002

This is a heads up to everyone out there who may or may not be aware of a more recent e-mail threat.  Most of you are accustomed to seeing e-mail attachments from people you don't even know, and for the most part, a lot of you don't even open the e-mail, and simply permanently delete it.

However, there's recently been a rise in "blank e-mails" coming into many people's e-mail inboxes.  In some cases, it appears to come from someome you know, and in other cases, you don't know who it's from at all.  The thing that catches many off guard is that there's no visible attachment.  Instead, some people are suspicious and think they'll open their Outlook or Outlook Express Preview Pane hoping to get a peek at what could possibly be in it.  You don't see anything on the e-mail itself, and it appears to be blank, but, what you may not realize is that there's HTML or VBS code embedded in the body of the e-mail, designed to execute when the e-mail is opened, or even when the Preview Pane is opened.

Hackers or attackers are becoming more sophisticated with the tools they're using to fool unsuspecting users into opening e-mail from someone they don't know.  Of course, the rule of thumb is, if you don't know who it's from, don't open it.  And of course, if it doesn't have an attachment, and is from someone you don't know, that should send some warning signals to you.  The best advice here, is to treat it as though it were a virus/worm and permanently delete it, and of course, ensure that your antivirus definitions are updated regularly.  Anti-virus updates for McAfee Anti-Virus, Norton Anti-Virus, PC-Cillin, Sophos, F-Secure, and Panda can be found at their respective download links.
