Another IE flaw, and a Power Point vulnerability for good measure
Written by t-readyroc

Yikes. A quick glance over Secunia's advisories page brought these two straight to my attention, both of which are rated "extremely critical," & neither of which have vendor patches listed as of yet. The first one is yet another IE vulnerability involving ActiveX controls; nothing terribly out of the ordinary, right? IE flaws have become par for the course of late. The second one, though, has me intrigued (read: concerned). It seems that any un-suspecting Power Point user could open a malicious .ppt file & compromise their entire system. It affects all versions of Office from 2000 through 2003, & even the Office for Mac versions are affected. The solution right now? Don't open un-trusted Office documents :-|

Call of Duty server security vulnerability
Written by t-readyroc
Monday, 25 September 2006
As long as we're at the gaming news today, let's touch on a security vulnerability in the CoD family of games. Lots of game servers out there (including mine) are doing many other things besides hosting game servers. If you're running a Call of Duty, Call of Duty: United Offensive, or Call of Duty 2 multiplayer server on such a box, you're definitely going to pay attention to this one. It seems that executing a suitably crafted callvotemap command in the console is enough to allow remote code execution. Unfortunately, there hasn't been an official patch issued yet, but the source for the advisory has crafted some un-official fixes.

Symantec: Vista not violating antitrust because it's not for sale yet

Vista's going to make life very difficult for third-party security software companies. Companies like Symantec, who are both not happy about it, & making their displeasure known. MS, I see yet more anti-trust in your future...

"While Symantec executives did accuse Microsoft of being more difficult to work with on Vista than with previous operating system introductions, they stopped short of accusing Microsoft of antitrust violations."

Russian pr0n zero-day IE6 critical flaw

Another "extremely critical" zero-day flaw for Internet Explorer 6 has been un-earthed. eWeek talks about it over here, while you can read the Secunia advisory here. Quoth MS, "what, me worry?"

"The exploit has been seeded at several porn sites hosted in Russia and is being used to launching drive-by malware downloads that appear to be hijacking Windows machines for use in botnets."
