Apple updates Java
Written by t-readyroc
Thursday, 15 September 2005
Apple's pushing out another security update that deals with Java issues, among other things. You can read the C|Net story here, or read the original advisory here. The official Apple document is here, with links to Java updates for both 10.3.9 & 10.4.2. They've got links to the release notes of newer versions of the J2SE, hosted on Sun's site. The minimum versions that Apple is recommending you update to are still several revisions behind the most current version, 5.0, update 4, which is apparently available for every OS under the sun except for OS X. Hrmph.

Win2K SP4 Roll-up 1 V2

Microsoft has re-done it's recent "Security Roll-up 1 for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4." This new, second revision comes on the heels of several problems reported after users installed the first version. I've rolled out the first version, though, to several PCs here with no problems reported, so this may or may not be a worthwhile update for you.

"The revamp to Rollup 1 Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 is a "high-priority" update rather than a security update, Microsoft said Tuesday, when it issued the pack. In its advance notification for Patch Tuesday, the software maker said it would deliver a nonsecurity update but did not provide any further details."

Firefox IDN flaw patched

C|Net is reporting that Mozilla has released a patch for the International Domain Name (IDN) flaw that was discovered last week by Tom Ferris. The patch actually just makes a configuration change that you could do yourself without the patch, but they released the patch anyway. The flaw will reportedly be addressed in the next Firefox release, 1.5 Beta 2, due at the beginning of next month.

"Switching off IDN support impacts a subset of Firefox and Mozilla users who actually use such special domain names, he said. Though there is no known attack that takes advantage of the flaw, Mozilla advises Firefox and Mozilla users to disable IDN."
