Phenoms in Q4 to run solo until 2H '08
Written by t-readyroc

DailyTech's got the latest roadmap posted, which shows off the names & models we can expect from AMD in the second half of 2008. Looks like the processors that we'll (hopefully) see at the end of this year will be with us for at least the six months following. Meanwhile, X-bit Labs has some more numbers posted from a supposed demonstration, but they don't say where the demo was, nor where they got the slides. Either way, the numbers are "projected" and "emulated," so nothing really new to see; just more hopes that the tech that will hit in Q1 '08 will hold up to the next iteration by the other side.

Barcelona next month, Phenom still set for Q4

Reports are circulating today that Barcelona, AMDs quad-core server chip, will begin shipping in August, albeit at the lower range of the frequency spectrum. These chips will likely be their 01 stepping variety, which produced poor yields, & topped-out at 2GHz. The 02 stepping chips should be able to get to 2.5GHz, & are expected to ship in time for the holidays. Meanwhile, AMD has refuted claims that the launch date of the desktop version of these chips, the Phenom, had slipped to Q1 '08. Here's hoping they make it by year's end. Competition is a good thing.

Intel's G35 DX9-only until 2008

Bad news for all the top-level system integrators like Dell who were planning to move to the latest Intel chipsets once they released this year. Especially for companies like Sony, who are releasing their newer models with only Vista pre-installed...

"Intel's G35 chipset was originally planned to support DirectX 10 at launch time, but due to the delay of a DirectX 10 driver, Intel currently schedules to launch the alpha version DirectX 10 driver in fourth quarter of 2007 and will launch the final version in first quarter of 2008 if the process goes well, noted the sources."

Don't hold your breath for AM3

If the rumors floating around are true, we won't see AM3 until 2H08; that's just about one year from now, for those of you keeping up with things. It means that AM2+ plus chips like Phenom will have to keep AMD afloat for over a half year. AMD will also apparently phase out their single core Athlon 64s as well:

"In their place, it's said, AMD will release a raft of 45W Semprons using the chip maker's new numbering scheme: the 1.9GHz LE-1100, the 2GHz LE-1150, the 2.1GHz LE-1200, the 2.2GHz LE-1250 and the 2.3GHz LE-1300."
