Intel's GPU-on-CPU roadmap details
Written by t-readyroc

The Reg has a ton of details posted about the 1H 2009 launch; a good primer if you haven't been keeping up on your Intel roadmaps. They also mention AMD's GPU-on-CPU plans for completeness.

"Bloomfield appears to be something of a stop-gap product, because roadmaps seen by PCWatch show a follow-up part, 'Lynnfield', due in H1 2009. It cuts the interconnect down to 1160 LGA pins and the adoption of PCI Express as the chip-to-chip bus."

First it was "no 3GHz," then it was "no 2.8GHz," then it was "no 2.6GHz," & finally, today, on launch day, AMD can't even muster the 2.4GHz version of its Phenom processors.

"In a weird deja-vu, it turns out that the company found an errata in the TLB (Transition Lookaside Buffer), just like Intel did earlier this year with complete Core marchitecture."

AMD socket AM3 reference designs maturing

AM2+ isn't even out the door yet, & AMD's got AM3 on its mind. The difference? DDR3 support, of course. Now if only DDR3 would start coming down in price...

"The initial reference boards that support AM3 processors will be based on an AMD RS780 northbridge and an AMD SB700 southbridge. The northbridge and southbridge communicate with each other via a 4X PCIe lane. The northbridge communicates directly with the CPU using a HyperTransport link."

Phenom 9700 2.4GHz to be highest at launch: $325

Looks like we're going to get three flavors of Phenom in two weeks when they launch, & the highest-clocked, the 9700, which runs at 2.4GHz, will retail for around $325. The Inq's got their details on the pricing scheme here, while Fudzilla's is here. The reason that I link both is because they've posted slightly different prices. Fudzilla's got a link to an etailer with a pre-order page if you're really antsy.
