Intel's roadmap's 180 at ProcessorBlog

Navid over at ProcessorBlog is talking about Intel's massive change-up regarding their roadmap. He's saying that Intel have switched their focus from brute force to finesse. This is only part one, so stay tuned...

"Intel took the backlash, but by the Fall of 2004 Intel had announced plans for a complete roadmap change, perhaps the most profound roadmap change in the last decade from the chip giant, that would allow it to better compete with other processor manufacturers – namely Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD)."

 
AMD AM2 summary of info at TechGage

TechGage has posted a summary article covering everything we know about AMD's upcoming socket, AM2, to this point. A good primer if you're still in the dark about the whole thing.

"There has not been that much info released about the AM2 yet, but there is enough to cover. Will this be a CPU that we should wait for before building another system? Let's take a look at what we know so far and see."

The Inq's got the details on the ASUS flavor of the RD580 chipset. They're saying it'll be a helluvan overclocker, too...

"ASUS will be among the first to embrace the ATI's new chipset. We saw a sample of ATI's reference motherboard at CES, and ATI will announce this board in a few days time. The code name is RD580 while it will be commercially known as the Radeon Xpress 3200."

Sun GPLs its newest UltraSPARC

Sun has released the architecture & API specifications of its latest "Niagra" processor to open source under the GPL. By doing this, it is hoping that its processors will gain a wider acceptance by OS' like Linux & BSD. Shrewd move.

"The first two are the chip's architecture specifications and the definitions that dictate how developers should deal with those specs. Finally, Sun is releasing the hypervisor APIs, which will make it easier for companies to port Linux or other operating systems onto the architecture, Splain said."
