Thanks to IBM, Wii are one step closer...

EETimes reports that the CPUs that will power Nintendo's upcoming Wii console are now shipping from IBM's Fishkill fab. Mass production of chips shipping means we're that much closer to seeing the final product on a store shelf near you...

"IBM and Nintendo signed a multi-year chip production agreement to support the upcoming launch of the game console earlier this year. IBM claims that the chip, code-named 'Broadway,' will deliver experiences not previously possible on video game consoles."

 
AMD announces Athlon X2 5200+

AMD's officially announced the Athlon X2 5200+, a native AM2 proc that will run at 2.6GHz & sport 2X1MB level two cache.

"AMD on Wednesday will debut its dual-core Athlon 64 X2 5200+ desktop processor. The high-end parts are intended for use in commercial desktop PCs. Hewlett-Packard will be among the first Tier I computer makers taking the CPU to market, in its new HP Compaq dc5750 desktop PC."

 
SGI looking to Itaniums?

Graphics industry veteran SGI is desperately looking for ways out of bankruptcy at the moment. I'd say that ditching your proprietary OS & hardware's definitely one way of doing it, but moving to Itanium? C'mooooon... I post a quote, but it's a German site. Core 2 overclocking at TweakTown

The TweakTown guys take an X6800 & an E6700 & see just how far they can push them. Then they run 'em through a bunch of gaming benchmarks so's you can see just what kind of performance advantage you'd get out of an overclocked Conroe.

"Core 2 is simply the answer to all our processor prayers. Not only does Core 2 show a good overclocking curve, even from these early samples we have, but the amount of heat generated per MHz over its default is less than half of what the Pentium 4 generated."
