AMD: roadmap updates; "asset-smart" in two weeks

A couple of sites are covering AMD roadmap updates today. CHW goes into specific timeline details for Q4, showing a "~3.0GHz, 125W" chip under embargo until 1.8.09. ExpReview covers the chipset side of things, but only really re-hashes stuff we already knew, like the Rx8xx series chipsets rumbling along with the SB750 for the first quarter.

Finally, XBitLabs has a piece that talks about AMD's "asset-smart" strategy being announced in two weeks' time. That's right around the 18th if you're counting, kiddies. The pervasive belief is still that AMD will spin-off its fabs into a separate business unit. Not too long till we find out for sure.

I'm sure it'll be fast, but a thousand bux fast? Lordy do we need AMD to get some competition going here. Only a couple months to go now...

"We also learned that the highly anticipated Core i7 comes in the first two weeks of November. The higher clocked one works at 3.2GHz and will cost $999."

Kuma listed; 4.4GHz FX-82 in the works... wait, WHAT?!?

Some rumored, some not so much.

Fudzilla's found a trio of Kuma processors listed. Yes, after months of delay, it seems AMD may finally be bringing the dual-core Phenom to market. Too late? Probably. Energy efficient? You bet.

This one's total rumor-ama, but hey, I'm always up for being hopeful when it comes to CPU competition. Can the Sunnyvale boys really bring a stock 4.4GHz chip to market this year? The screenshot's small & not maximiz-able, but I'm still drooling. Bring on the Phenom FX-82, please.

AMD launches 790GX platform

AMD launches the long-awaited update to its integrated graphics platform today, the 790GX. The GX will sport an updated IGP, the Radeon 3300, as well as the new, overclocker-friendly SB750 southbridge. AMD will also re-launch its 790FX platform to include the new southbridge, but I haven't found any word on that ETA yet. The FX platform will be targeted at "enthusiasts," & feature multiple x16 PCIe slots.

I've read the only two reviews I can find right now, & neither really goes into any detail about Hybrid CrossFire. I'm most interested in Hybrid CrossFire because of the possibility of using the discrete graphics card only when necessary. Unfortunately, with the 790GX's predecessor, the 780G, using Hybrid CrossFire with anything more powerful than an HD34xx series card was not possible. My hope is that as more reviews hit today, a site out there will attempt to put the new tech to the test. You can find my discussion about Hybrid CrossFire here, on the [H] forums.

AMD's press release (nifty video included) is here. There are currently four 790GX boards listed at Newegg, here. Let's get to the reviews!
