Catchin' up on da newz
Saturday, 16 November 2002
Now that our hosting problems seem to be resolved (for the moment), and I actually have a few minutes to myself, I shall endeavor to catch up on some news.

Envy News reviews some Digital Vinyl CD-R's from Verbatim.

“Verbatim offers the ‘Digital Vinyl CD-R’ product in two sizes – the first is a 5-pack with standard jewel cases and the second is a 10-pack with the same cases. In the 5-pack, Verbatim includes five colors of discs. The color corresponds to the ‘spindle label’ and not the disc’s coating or ‘vinyl’ color. Sporting real grooves on the top surface and Verbatim's patented Super Azo dye coating, these discs take us down memory lane.”

They also take a look at Sky Hawk USA’s PSR-4609D7, a.k.a. Jupiter case.

“Upon opening the box, I was greeted with quite a sight. I had an idea of how the case would look from a small picture on Sky Hawk’s website. However, seeing it in person skewed my perception of the rather odd looking case into one of instant fascination and admiration for the unique front panel. If you're into case lighting, I suggest you take a peek at the Jupiter PSR-4609D7.”

Tech-Report thinks it's time for a new Athlon MP chipset, in their article titled After the 760MPX: We need a new dual-Athlon chipset. From what I read, they're right.

"A year or more ago, we couldn't get enough of AMD's dual-processor platform. Unfortunately, the 760MPX hasn't kept up with the times, and that could really hurt the Athlon MP's prospects in the coming months. Is the dual Athlon platform doomed to languish on the 760MPX, or could a savior take it to new heights?"

Alltechbox is giving away a waterblock and a complete water cooling kit. Rules for the waterblock contest here, and rules for the complete kit contest here.

Hexus.net reviews the MSI 845PE MAX2 FIR motherboard.

Along with ABIT's MAX series of boards, the MSI 845PE series would be high on my prospective motherboard list if I was looking for a fast, feature-packed, and stable platform. Priced at around £120, this MSI that a feature-laden motherboard doesn't have to cost the earth. Sure, it's more expensive than its SiS counterparts, but not radically so. The BFIR, with an additional bundled Bluetooth receiver, can be had for around £140."

zzounds.com has the Mackie 1202-VLZ mixer for...whoops. next message. :)

TwistedMods looks at another case from SkyHawk, this time the SkyHawk Galaxy.

"Speaking of hearts, the "heart" of the Galaxy would have to be its appealing front panel. Composed of everything from plastic, aluminum and even Plexiglas, the Galaxy could, quite possibly have the most beautiful front (even over the Jupiter!) I have seen yet. It sure does beat the boring old Lian-Li square style front."

PCREVIEWSPOT has a mouse bungee.. In case your mouse is into extreme sports I guess....

"How many times have you had your mouse cord snag and get caught behind your desk while you're trying to game? Admit it! For many of us this is an extremely annoying issue that never seems to go away. Today we will be taking a look at one of those rare ingenious products that solve everyday problems, yet still remain extremely simple and economical, the Mouse Bungee!"

News from Hexus.net
Thursday, 14 November 2002
I don't know why but SpamAssassin, a spam filtering software on our mail server, always seems to flag messages from Hexus as SPAM, of course it also flagged an RMA message from NewEgg as spam too. But, I digress. Today Hexus has also released a review of Intel's new 3.06GHz Pentium 4 processor. And they've got some pics and benchmarks on their forums of MSI's Granite Bay P4 Mobo.

Pentium 4 3.06GHz w/Hyper-Threading review
Thursday, 14 November 2002
Intel's brand spankin' new 3.06GHz Pentium 4 has been officially released today, and Tech-Report has reviewed the little beasty.

"INTEL'S PENTIUM 4 processor crosses the 3GHz threshold today. We've been playing with one for a while, and now we get to show you what it's all about. This chip brings Intel's Hyper-Threading technology to desktop processors for the first time. Like clockwork, only much messier, we've loaded up eleven different test configs with a brutal suite of benchmarks to see how the new P4 measures up. Read up to get the lowdown on the new Pentium 4's nosebleed-inducing 3GHz speeds and creamy smooth Hyper-Threading tech."

Skyhawk Jupiter Case Review @ ThinkComputers
Thursday, 14 November 2002
"When this case first came out I thought it was going to be lame. I was totally WRONG! This case rocks! It looks great, has alot of good features and has a good design. The thing that I like most about the case is the light/LCD module. That was a really good idea, I have never seen anything like that before. Also I really like the front ports. The are coming stardard on most of the new cases coming out. Some of the other things I like about this case are the fan duct, thumbscrews, and its weight."
