Largest Prime Number in History is Found
Written by Benjamin A. Hunter
Thursday, 04 December 2003

A 26-year-old student at Michigan State University has made history by discovering the largest prime number in history. He was one of more than 60,000 volunteers who offered spare cpu time to the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS).

"The new number is 6,320,430 digits long. It took just over two years to find using a distributed network of more than 200,000 computers. Prime numbers are positive integers that can only be divided by themselves and one. Mersenne primes are an especially rare type of prime that take the form 2 p-1, where p is also a prime number. The new number can be represented as 220,996,011-1. It is only the 40th Mersenne prime to have ever been found."

Reviewed: Gigabyte 16x DVD-ROM With FM/MP3
Written by Benjamin A. Hunter

OCWorkbench reviews one of the coolest optical drives I've seen yet:

"[The] Gigabyte GO-M1600A is a 16x DVD-ROM with something added on. This is probably the first device that allows you to tune in to the FM radio or play the CD Audio or MP3 disc without the need to power up your PC. This is possible because the device is powered up by a separate power.

... [the]GO-M1600A is definitely something that will change the whole concept of DVD-ROM or even DVD-RW in the future. With a nice feature set, this unit is one of the most innovative product that we review this year. This product stands out from the crowd and it is a dream come true - a device that plays CD, MP3 and FM tuner without powering up PC."

And it has a remote!

The Inquirer says:

"...all will be dual channel chips in about two months. All A64s will soon have dual memory channels, so you won't have to worry about buying a single channel CPU with a dual channel mobo, or the other way around."
