New growth technique nets "nanoblades" with better energy storage properties
Written by t-readyroc
Wednesday, 26 September 2007

The nanoblades are thinner, have more surface area, & are still very evenly dispersed. Unlike the previous nanotubes, the nanoblade's significantly increased surface area lends it properties that would be beneficial for energy storage.

"In order to store hydrogen, a large surface area is needed to provide room for the material to expand as more hydrogen atoms are stored. The vast surface area of each nanoblade, coupled with the large spaces between each blade, could make them ideal for storage applications."

Opening beers with computer parts at Phoronix

OK, this one definitely falls into the, "you must have been really bored" category. The guys at Phoronix were killing time (& brain cells) at IDF & decided to see how easy it'd be to open beers with things like video cards & LGA sockets. Yes, really.

"Interested in finding out how you can open a beer bottle (or most any glass bottle for that matter) using a range of computer parts from a motherboard to RAM and even a USB mouse? We documented these steps with plenty of pictures as well as sharing which hardware doesn't convert into a bottle opener so easily."

The PCMechanic crew lays out a couple of options for you to keep your PC busy whenever you're not using it. The backup option is my personal fav.

"So, let’s look at some ways of putting your computer’s time to use when you are counting sheep and studying the backs of your eyelids."

Comcast: is you is, or is you ain't?

So are they or aren't they? There are definitely stories circulating the web that Comcast is throttling BitTorrent seeds. But then yesterday, Comcast officially denied actively filtering their traffic based on applications. They did, however, say they cut off customers for "using too much bandwidth," but hey, we've known about that for quite some time now. Unless they're suddenly mandating some miniscule upstream cap...

If it ain't Comcast, then somethin' fishy is definitely going on.... Either way, it doesn't bode well for Comcast customers, such as myself. I'd ditch 'em, but I literally have no other choice for broadband.
