I just completed a write-up for class that summarizes a couple of articles on online mapping applications.  While doing my research, I found that while information on the subject was plentiful, the amount that was easily available was few & far between, so I'm posting it here in hopes that it may help someone in the future.  It's a quick overview of what goes into an online mapping application and a look at how companies are starting to ditch Google Maps in favor of open source alternatives like OpenLayers.

Best hardware of 2004 at the TechReport
Interesting
Tuesday, 04 January 2005

The TechReport crew have posted their "best of" year-end review. All of the year's hardware that made the biggest impacts is up for you to have a gander at.

"It was a good year for enthusiasts, and we've singled out a handful of products for our Best of 2004 awards. To be eligible for Best of 2004 distinction, a product had to be widely available for a reasonable portion of the year. Paper launches and limited or late-year releases didn't qualify, although you might see some of those products pop up in next year's awards."

Transferrable TiVo?
Audio/Video
Tuesday, 04 January 2005

Now they're saying that you'll be able to transfer your TiVo shows to a different PC? I wonder how they're going to be able to discern whether or not it's a "laptop," & futhermore, how they'll be able to do this with PC's with DVD burners, as they say they plan to in the future? Should be interesting to see how it shakes out...

"TiVo, the maker of the digital video recorder, is now pushing a no-cost automatic software update to its standalone Series 2 devices, except those belonging to subscribers with DVD recorders. The company plans to get TiVoToGo to DVD recorder subscribers later this year."

Trying to decide which bluetooth mouse is the one for you? The gang at the TechZone have put together a comparison of two of the better ones on the market today, the MS Intellimouse Explorer, & the Logitech MX900. Head on over & check it out if you're in the buyer's market.

"Both are wireless mice powered by Bluetooth technology and both promise to open your computer to a Bluetooth world by allowing it to connect to other Bluetooth devices like cell phones, PDA or anything else that is Bluetooth enable. But the question remains, which mouse is better?"
