I just completed a write-up for class that summarizes a couple of articles on online mapping applications.  While doing my research, I found that while information on the subject was plentiful, the amount that was easily available was few & far between, so I'm posting it here in hopes that it may help someone in the future.  It's a quick overview of what goes into an online mapping application and a look at how companies are starting to ditch Google Maps in favor of open source alternatives like OpenLayers.

TCCD shootout at Hexus
Reviews
Written by treadyroc
Tuesday, 15 March 2005

Hexus sets out to find out which of the major brands putting out sticks with the TCCD chips are the best of the best. If you're looking for serious overclocking performance, Samsung's TCCD's are the way to go right now.

"To sum up, if you want the coolest modules on the block and you're feeling flush, the Corsair Xpert is in a niche of its own. Paired with Samsung's TCCD modules, there's a world of performance to be had from them at modest Vdimm. Otherwise, the G.Skill and OCZ both come recommended at around the £200 mark, with Corsair's XL PRO and XL PT under that price, too."

More cool stuff from CeBIT, this time over at DigiTimes. They're reporting on the new mini-ITX board from VIA that supports dual-processors. That's right, a mini-ITX duallie. These boards run two of VIA's 1GHz Eden chips.

"Peripheral features of the board include one Gigabit Ethernet port, two Fast Ethernet (10/100Mbps) ports, one PCI slot, one Mini-PCI Type IIIA connector, one Ultra ATA/133 connector, two Serial ATA channels (with RAID support), up to four USB ports and VIA’s Vinyl Six-TRAC audio codec."

More CeBIT coverage at Hexus
Just News

Monday, 14 March 2005
The Hexus crew's got some good stuff from CeBIT posted. First up is an ECS board that supports both P4's & A64's?!? How crazy is that? The ECS PF88 will run an A64 from a PCIe-based daughter board :o You've got to see it if you haven't already. More mix 'n match madness at CeBIT this year in the form of a BTX AMD system in Biostar's new iDEQ. The iDEQ 330P is nForce4-based, & runs inside what Hexus are terming a picoBTX implementation. Finally, the busy crew got some shots of a new Azalia-based motherboard being made by Sapphire; code-named Grouper. Interesting...

Palm joins CELF, continues on Linux track
Interesting
Written by treadyroc
Friday, 11 March 2005

Palm is apparently serious about their plans for a Linux based PalmOS. I can see a ton of people buying Palm's if for only this reason. Used to be you could get Sharp's Zaurus & slap a Linux OS on it, but they're now only available in Japan :-/

"CELF was founded two years ago to promote the use of Linux in devices such as handheld computers and mobile phones. Founders include Matsushita Electric Industrial, Sony, Hitachi, NEC, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sharp and Toshiba to promote the use of Linux in devices such as handheld computers and mobile phones."

Cool!
Written by treadyroc
Friday, 11 March 2005

How sweet would it be to have a couple of these cards in your gaming rig? All settings on max, all the time, baby. Nice.

"Oh yes, you can rely on us to bring you the good stuff. Over here at CeBIT, the mighty (and rather impressive) XFX stand is showing off the very latest in GFX grunt.. a very sexy SLi set up using two 6800Ultra 512megs!"

Compnay promises fuel cells for laptops by year's end
Cool!
Written by treadyroc
Friday, 11 March 2005

CNet is reporting that there's another company out to put fuel cells into laptops, but this time they're promising delivery by year's end. How cool would that be? Never having to worry about your laptop's battery dying on you sounds pretty sweet to me. Long plane rides... awww yeah. You can see a larger photo of it here.

"The prototype, which is the size of a CD-ROM, was demonstrated at the CeBit trade show here on Thursday. The company also showed off a prototype 12W fuel cell for notebook PCs and a prototype fuel cell charger for cell phones."

Digital SLR lens & 19" LCD buying guides
Guides
Written by treadyroc
Friday, 11 March 2005
Couple of buying guides posted today: one for used digital SLR lenses, & one for 19" LCD displays. The ARP crew is all over the digital SLR boom, & talks about how cheaply one can actually pick up decent lenses. Why spend tons of dough for a new lens, when you can snatch up a very nice used one? The XYZ gang is laying it all down for those of you in the hunt for a 19" LCD. There are a ton of great models out there currently with a huge price range. I myself am waiting for the same thing to happen with the 20" variety ;)

Today we're going to be having a look at another product from MGE/XG: the Vigor 500W power supply. This MGE's lower line of power supplies, with the Vortec just having been introduced recently, & the Magnum coming out this month. If you have any doubts after reading this review that the Vigor is the lower model line in this lineup, head on over to the XG site & check out the Magnum... it's mind-blowing.

Dual-core Turions confirmed
Interesting
Written by treadyroc
Thursday, 10 March 2005

Good stuff as always at the Inq-well. They've cornered an AMD PR rep & beat the tar outta... I mean... questioned him about the emerging re-vamped AMD naming scheme & the release of a dual-core Turion.

"He added: It's on our roadmap to have a dual core notebook chip. Opteron processors will be the middle of this year, then the desktop, then the notebook."

No Mozilla 1.8 Final?
Interesting
Written by treadyroc
Thursday, 10 March 2005

That's what it's looking like. I'm not entirely sure why the Mozilla foundation even continued to develop & promote two major projects like this in the first place. Maybe if they weren't so similar, but with the resounding success of Firefox, you had to know this was coming.

"Further discussion seems to indicate that with Firefox and Thunderbird development, along with other Mozilla Foundation activities, and the lack of developers, reviewers, and sufficient users of the Suite, there very well may not be a final release of the 1.8 version of Seamonkey."
