I just completed a write-up for class that summarizes a couple of articles on online mapping applications.  While doing my research, I found that while information on the subject was plentiful, the amount that was easily available was few & far between, so I'm posting it here in hopes that it may help someone in the future.  It's a quick overview of what goes into an online mapping application and a look at how companies are starting to ditch Google Maps in favor of open source alternatives like OpenLayers.

FireFox Faux-Commercial
Cool!

Monday, 21 March 2005
Around here, we LOVE FireFox - it's great stuff.  Seems others like it quite a bit as well.  Some like it enough to make a rather sweet little "commercial" for it.

Though many are calling this a commercial for FireFox - I doubt it's anything more than someone showing off their skills.

A group of programmers has released a program called PyMusique that allows one to purchase music from iTunes and save it without the FairPlay digital rights management.

Cody Brocious, one of PyMusique's programmers, said the ability to save songs without copy protection was essentially an accident derived from the way Apple's system downloads songs. He said the software wasn't intended to harm Apple.

P.S. Sorry if you're dead
Unbelievable

It seems that Canadian computerized scheduling systems have no tact.

Moncton Hospital sent out a computer generated letter to a New Brunswick heart patient in need of an electrocardiogram.

Then it ended with the caring and sensitive phrase "If the person named on this computer-generated letter is deceased, please accept our sincere apologies."

Urban Legend Legislation (continued)

Written by WiLD
Sunday, 20 March 2005
Some time back we posted an item about State Senator Andrea Stillman (D) pushing legislation that would make cell phone usage at the pump illegal.  Sen. Stillman stated  "It is a known, documented fact that using a cell phone in proximity of the gas pump can cause an electrical charge that can cause a fire that can ignite the pump".

The BBC News reports of yet more research that puts this thinking into the "busted myth" catagory.

Senator Stillman has not responded to multiple requests for comment.

Thoughts on Apples 2-button mouse at CoolTechZone

I dunno about Apple's one-button mouse being the reason that Windows users don't convert, but I suppose introducing a two-button mouse certainly couldn't hurt...

"The first problem Windows users face when switching to Macintosh is that the inherent limitations of a single-button mouse quite literally drives them insane. While numerous (excluding early Mac adopters) users have complained about this issue, Apple seemed to be holding steadfast and brutally declined to listen to anything Windows users had to say; at least that’s what many concluded from Apple’s lack of response."

Running apps from your flash drive at TechTastic
Cool!
Written by treadyroc
Friday, 18 March 2005

Techtastic's got an interesting article up about applications you can keep on your USB flash drive. That is, programs that you can keep on your flash drive, & run them from there anytime you want. Very nice for keeping personal preference-type stuff close at hand...

"Basically what he did was optimize Mozilla's Thunderbird and Firefox to be used on a flash drive. Why would you want to do that you may ask? Well imagine if you will that you could use your applications such as your browser on any computer and still have access to your favorites/bookmarks, or your email in the case of Thunderbird."

Continuing DDR development at CoolTechZone
Just News

DDR is dead! Long live DDR!! Well, at least that's what the gang over at CoolTechZone is pushing today. They think that DDR's still got some life in 'er yet...

"We were also told that the life span of DDR would be at least two years if not more, due to the immaturity and on-going development of DDR2. Some companies also mentioned that they were firmly committed and were going to continue to develop DDR in hopes of breaking new grounds. In fact, many memory makers admitted to having a few samples of DDR memory with speeds upwards of 650MHz."

BFG 6600GT OC vs. X700 at XYZComputing
Reviews

Thursday, 17 March 2005

The XYZ crew are having a mid-range graphics card cage match. They're pitting the PCIe flavors of the 6600GT against the X700 against each other in an all-out battle to the death. If you're in the market for a new video card, & these two are in your price range, you'll certainly want to give this article a look.

"Like many other users I have serious reservations about spending what it takes to buy a top-shelf video card, like a 6800 or X850- I just can't justify the added expense for the amount of gaming that I do. I generally find myself buying mid-range cards, like my old ATI Radeon 9600XT, and others in that general price range. This review compares two new cards in this price and sees just what they can do."

Cell phone video madness!
Audio/Video

Couple of stories at C|Net that I think may end up going hand-in-hand. You'll see what I mean. First there's this bit on the fact that Sprint's going to be selling video ring tones. Yes, that's right, as if MTV & American Idol weren't ruining your life enough already, you'll now be able to answer your cell phone to your favorite band's music video! The second story is about the proliferation of porn over cell phones. Put two & two together, & what do you get? Heh, see what I mean?
