I just completed a write-up for class that summarizes a couple of articles on online mapping applications.  While doing my research, I found that while information on the subject was plentiful, the amount that was easily available was few & far between, so I'm posting it here in hopes that it may help someone in the future.  It's a quick overview of what goes into an online mapping application and a look at how companies are starting to ditch Google Maps in favor of open source alternatives like OpenLayers.

Secunia's found an exploit in Netscape that doesn't currently have a fix yet.

" The vulnerability is 'highly critical,' according to an advisory released by the Danish company late Tuesday. Version 6.2.3 and 7.2 of Netscape are affected and other versions may also be susceptible, the company said."

Microbial fuel cells - human waste in, hydrogen out
Interesting
Written by t-readyroc
Tuesday, 26 April 2005

Seems that using bacteria instead of the usual fermentation process in current fuel cells yields more hydrogen...

"The MFC (Microbial Fuel Cell) can produce more hydrogen than normal because byproducts of the fermentation reaction can yield additional hydrogen. Typically in fermentation, bacteria consume carbohydrates and release hydrogen and "dead end" fermentation products like acetic acid that the bacteria can't break down."

Game developers in bed with graphics card companies

The CoolTechZone crew philosophizes on the current state of game developer / graphics card manufacturer relationships.

"To break down my buying decision, I would probably consider the card’s features, the novel (and pointless in certain cases) concept of future proofing, price and performance in games that I want to play. Everything sounds so clear-cut, doesn’t it? I hate to be the one to break the news to you, but picking a graphics card is not an easy task these days. I can probably list a few reasons as to why my thinking runs that way, but chances are you are already aware of them."

Opera CEO hits the water
Unbelievable

I can't believe the guy's actually doing it... Wonder if he'll make it to the end, or if he'll be cheating....? Swimming a few miles, then climbing onto a boat to warm up & eat, etc, isn't what most people have in mind when thinking about "swimming across the Atlantic." Either way, I'm sure there'll be some weak docu-drama produced eventually... ugh.

400GB drive shoot out

Battle of the titans over at Techwarelabs. I'd personally be surprised to see the non-NCQ drive win out...

"Recently, Hitachi and Seagate have come out with two of the biggest desktop hard drives available on the market at a massive 400GB each. These two drives carry almost identical specifications, with the exception of the Seagate Barracuda and its Native Command Queuing technology."

Too many DVD formats in the future?
Editorials
Written by t-readyroc
Monday, 25 April 2005

EETimes is running an article building on the recent announcements by the major electronics manufacturers that they want to work together to avoid a DVD format war. I know I for one am seriously hoping that it can all be sorted out by the time the next generation of formats hits the mainstream.

"Members of the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD industry groups should compromise on one new hybrid format for next-generation DVDs. What's more, they should provide a simple way to share the high-quality content on those disks in secure, responsible ways."

Kingmax to up DDR2 production
Just News

I guess Kingmax has some DDR2 stockpiled that they need to get rid of... Just means that pricing will get even lower around then, I guess...

"Kingmax Semiconductor, ranked as the world's eighth-largest third-party DRAM-module supplier by iSuppli for the last two years, is hoping to increase the proportion of DDR2 products in its unit shipments to, at least, 20% by the end of this year."

Just News

Monday, 25 April 2005

Well, the OS is here & will be announced later today. All's we need now is for aaallll of the software companies to auto-magically start shipping 64bit versions of their apps..... heh.

"The new Windows won't be showing up on retail shelves, though. Customers who buy a desktop or server with a 64-bit chip will have the option of getting the new operating system, while people who own an existing 64-bit machine will have the option of trading in their old 32-bit Windows for the 64-bit upgrade."

Rumors

Monday, 25 April 2005

The CoolTechZone's bevy of industry insiders have produced yet another nugget of info this morning. This time they're all over AMD's upcoming adoption of DDR500 as their official platform standard.

"Up until today, DDR400 has been the official memory standard for majority of the platforms, but Intel made the change to DDR2, and now it’s AMD’s turn to make a change to their platform. According to an insider source, AMD has plans to adopt DDR500 as its official memory standard in the very near future."

Security

It's patch your Real Player time again, folks. These guys are getting to be just like MS with their flaws & patches, ain't they?

"The flaw, rated a ' highly critical' risk by security company Secunia, affects most recent consumer versions of the RealPlayer media player software, for both Windows and Macintosh operating systems. Also at risk are some, but not the most recent, versions of the software for Linux."

Verizon DSL customers download movie rentals
Just News

Friday, 22 April 2005

Verizon & Movielink have teamed up for download-able video rentals. Only caveat is that you'll have to have your TV connected to a PC in your house, but of course, what true geek doesn't have that setup already?

" The rentals are available to customers of Verizon Online's digital subscriber line and Fios Internet service, Verizon said. These customers can choose from a selection of titles on Movielink's video-on-demand service."

Motorola on a roll-a

Motorola & Apple working together on a product? Nothing new, of course, until you throw the whole cell phone part in there... Push to view sounds way cool, though.

"Push to view, the video equivalent of push to talk, is 'right around the corner,' he (Motorola CEO Ed Zander) added... Zander also said that the iTunes phone 'will be coming out in the next few months.'"
