I just completed a write-up for class that summarizes a couple of articles on online mapping applications.  While doing my research, I found that while information on the subject was plentiful, the amount that was easily available was few & far between, so I'm posting it here in hopes that it may help someone in the future.  It's a quick overview of what goes into an online mapping application and a look at how companies are starting to ditch Google Maps in favor of open source alternatives like OpenLayers.

Yet more CTZ with yet more good info. This time about ATi's upcoming release, the R520, code-named Fudo.

"A source close to ATI’s board partners revealed that R520 based graphics adapters will start appearing on shelves sometime in Q3 or between July – September timeframe. This would mean that if ATI introduces their R520 at Computex, which will take place in Taipei, Taiwan from May 31st – June 4th, there’s a minimum of one-month delay before actual products appear on retail shelves."

Put a 4GB drive in a Palm device, & you've certainly got something that'd give an iPod a run for its money. With drives getting easier to build in smaller sizes, I think we'll see more & more PDA's go this route.

" The No. 1 handheld maker will introduce LifeDrive Mobile Manager on May 18, according to sources familiar with the company's plans. The $499 device will come with a 4GB Hitachi Microdrive and two flavors of wireless networking--Bluetooth and 802.11b Wi-Fi."

Hexus has come through once again with some big-time info on ATi's upcoming Multi-VPU technology; ie. SLi, ATi style. Seems there might be a bit more to it than just plopping a couple of video cards into your favorite motherboard:

"The system will run with a master card and slave card. The slave card can be ANY ATI card on the market, which is just about as cool as absolute zero, but (and it’s a big BUT).. the master card, which will control the frame buffer, has to support MVP."

"Today were going to cover the basics of painting on a full set of awesome products, Logitech’s MX1000, Saitek’s lighted gaming keyboard with command pad, Hercules's ProphetView 920 flat panel, and Sennheiser's headset."

CTZ's at it again. This time around, they're reporting that ATi will be launching its Multi-VPU technology at Computex, its version of SLi. They've also got an article up looking at the differences between the dual-core offerings of AMD & Intel. They're suggesting that Intel's been playing catch-up in that arena, & may end up paying for it.

The emerging media venues, especially blog sites, have certainly changed the way that information is released to the world. The DT crew examine the CNET / Engadget strife, & what it means for the future of NDA's & the technology industry.

"Her point was that the Internet has changed the rules surrounding how information is actually released and NDAs now only seem to hurt the traditional publications along with the customers of those publications and should be rethought. After watching Apple take some bloggers to court for doing what any news organization can do, I certainly agree we need to rethink a lot of the rules here."

Steve over at AWorldofHelp has gone to WinHEC & conquered the masses. Um... ok, maybe not, but he's certainly posted a very comprehensive overview of the upcoming MS OS release, codenamed "Longhorn."

"I've been using the Longhorn Build released at WinHEC for a little while now, and I'll get to my thoughts on it at the end of the article. For now, I want to cover the basics of Longhorn, and bring you up to speed on its key features and the hardware you'll need to run it."

Happy Cinco de Mayo. Hug your nearest Mexican, then do a shot a of tequila. It's good for you. Even if you don't usually go wild on Cinco, you'll never see another 05-05-05... take advantage of that fact ;)

This is too funny. All those classified documents with the "blacked-out" parts that you're not allowed to see? Yeah, I hope they're not in .pdf format anywhere. Hah.

"Portions of the document had been "blacked out" by electronic means. But apparently, it was possible for outsiders to copy and paste the blacked-out sections into another file--and see the text that had been hidden."

WinXP64 gaming at the [H]

The [H] gang also put up a very revealing article yesterday regarding gaming on the 64bit Windows OS, WinXP64. I'll go ahead & ruin this one for ya, too: unless you've got a game written for a 64bit OS, it don't make a damn bit o' difference. They did, however find out that driver support is not going to be too much of a hiccup.

"That said, it looks as though many gamers wanting to put those seasoned Athlon AMD 64 processors to use on a new Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, can do so without much fear."

In case you live under a rock, ATi launched their 512MB X800XL card yesterday. This card's got one huge difference between it & the NVIDIA 512MB competition: ~$500. A ton of sites reviewed it. Here they are, in no particular order:

Hexus
The TechReport

DriverHeaven
Guru3D
Beyond3D
Bit-Tech

If you want the gory details, in a nutshell, the extra RAM didn't do much to help the benchies. There. I ruined it for ya ;)
