I just completed a write-up for class that summarizes a couple of articles on online mapping applications.  While doing my research, I found that while information on the subject was plentiful, the amount that was easily available was few & far between, so I'm posting it here in hopes that it may help someone in the future.  It's a quick overview of what goes into an online mapping application and a look at how companies are starting to ditch Google Maps in favor of open source alternatives like OpenLayers.

Molecular switch & transistor demonstrated
Cool!

Monday, 06 June 2005

University of Alberta researchers are one step closer to using molecules as transistors & switches. Crazy stuff, this nanotech.

"Working with postdoctoral fellows Paul Piva and Stanislav Dogel, as well as graduate student Janik Zikovsky, Wolkow's team placed a single organic molecule on a silicon substrate so that the molecule acted as the transistor channel, with the substrate acting as a back gate for switching."

Well crap. I hope that someone else steps up to fill the enormous gap that this software's departure will leave. Thanks for all of your time & effort, Lightning, you will be missed.

"Ok so it has taken a while (almost 2 years), but eventually 'a certain company' has decided they don't like what I'm doing (circumventing their protection) and have come at me like a pack of wolves. I've no choice but to cease everything to do with DVD Decrypter."

The TechLounge crew have posted what they think is a good way to build yourself your next rig if you're not looking to blow a couple of month's paychecks on it. Some would argue, however, that $1,500 isn't exactly mid-range loot...

"This includes the internal hardware, input devices, monitor and speakers (everything but an OS). The components we have chosen for this system are what we consider to be good all-around products with the best bang for the buck."

Well - this little romance has been brewing for quite some time.  We've all heard the rumors, the denials, and most recently, the analysts talking.  But now...

"Apple Computer plans to announce Monday that it's scrapping its partnership with IBM and switching its computers to Intel's microprocessors"

Is this really, REALLY, real this time?

Hrmph... I didn't even know there was an, "unprecedented demand for solar energy equipment." Looks like the market is picking up, though...

"There has also been a dramatic cost reduction in the manufacturing process with the costs of solar photovoltaic production declining by 80 percent to 90 percent over the past 20 years..."

K8T890 not X2 compatible
CPU/Chipset

Friday, 03 June 2005

Looks like if you've got a K8T890 board, you're going to be SOL if you're planning to upgrade to an X2 chip when they become available. Well, maybe not SOL, but you're going to have to buy a new mobo ;)

"It is unclear what the exact reason behind incompatibility of VIA’s core-logic and AMD’s dual-core processors is. AMD Athlon 64-series processors use Hyper-Transport bus, which is an industry standard that does not change from revision to revision, that ensures interoperability between variety of mainboards and processors, even despite of actual speed-bin."

BSOD > RSOD in Longhorn?
Interesting
Written by t-readyroc
Friday, 03 June 2005

There's a blurb over at the Inq-well reporting that the BSOD will become the RSOD in the next Windows OS, currently code-named Longhorn.

"He thinks that it is supposed to appear if something really bad happens. However Red Screen of Death seems to have appeared by making a 'small set-up change' and altering the registry."

Some SFF news being brought to us by the folks at DigiTimes this morning. First up, they're reporting that Iwill has set a September launch date for their dual-Opteron SLi SFF box, the ZMAXd2. There are a few shots of a working box that I'd assume were taken at Computex on the linked page. Next up is Shuttle, who has also set a date for their SLi SFF box to hit the streets. They'll be getting to market with their SN26P XPC a bit earlier than Iwill with a July release planned.

GLAY'z to release five hardcore porn titles on UMD
Unbelievable
Written by WiLD
Thursday, 02 June 2005
Ok, so - I've got a 12 year old with a PSP so this one worries me just a bit.  I'm sure there are plenty of PSP owners of legal porn peruseing age (I happen to be one of them) but my guess is the majority of owners do not fall into that catagory.

"GLAY'z's first batch of UMDs will be out in July, with more promised to follow. It's not yet known whether these will include other back catalogue titles such as Burst, Sexual Humiliation Hospital and The Exellent Breast Body ERO Titism."

GamesIndustry.biz has a bit more information...
