I just completed a write-up for class that summarizes a couple of articles on online mapping applications.  While doing my research, I found that while information on the subject was plentiful, the amount that was easily available was few & far between, so I'm posting it here in hopes that it may help someone in the future.  It's a quick overview of what goes into an online mapping application and a look at how companies are starting to ditch Google Maps in favor of open source alternatives like OpenLayers.

X Prize goes green
Just News

Looks like the X Prize Foundation is setting its sights on something a bit more down-to-earth (earth-y?). I think I'd like to see a good 100mpg car out of them than a new spacecraft, personally.

"The foundation billed the contest as independent and technology-neutral. It is open to teams from around the world that can design green vehicles that people want to buy and that meet market needs for price, size, capability, safety and performance."

The Pwn2Own competition at this year's CanSecWest later this month will feature three different OSs on three different laptops, & whoever executes code remotely first on each laptop gets to take the laptops home. Which OS will fall first?

"This year's Pwn2Own competition will place three brand-new, fully patched laptops side by side: a Fujitsu U810 running Vista Ultimate, a Vaio VGN-TZ37Cn running Ubuntu 7.10 and a MacBook Air running Leopard."

The auction ended yesterday and a total of nearly $20 billion was raised. The winner(s) of the C block of the 700MHz spectrum won with a bid just shy of $5 billion, but are still unknown at this time.

"The C block spectrum includes a requirement sought by Internet leader Google Inc that would make it accessible to any device or software application."

Why buy an add-in sound card? at TechwareLabs
Interesting
Written by t-readyroc
Thursday, 20 March 2008

The TechwareLabs guys do a specs comparison between a decent on-board sound solution and an ASUS Xonar card. They go through the reasoning behind the comparison, & the meaning of the specs. It's a decent write-up that should give anyone thinking about an add-in card some thoughts to mull over.

"With the widespread availability of onboard sound why would a consumer select an add-on sound card to their system?"

The guys at ThinkComputers are giving away an NZXT Tempest case with a ton of airflow options to a lucky registered forum member You have to have at least 40 forums posts, so this one's not likely for the newbies unless you plan to spend the next three weeks posting ;-) Sweet case though.

Aspyr ships native Enemy Territory: Quake Wars for OS X
Gaming
Written by t-readyroc
Wednesday, 19 March 2008

From everything that I can tell, this is a native OS X game; not one that requires running an emulation layer. That being said, it's for Intel-based Macs only. Of course, I'd postulate that the majority of gamers who own Macs these days are recent buyers...

"Mac users can at last join the struggle for Earth, as the Mac OS X flavor of Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars is now shipping in North America!"

Vista service pack 1 has been officially released, & you can now grab the redistributable package directly from MS, or wait for your auto-updater to pick it up. Not to be left out of the update party, Apple released a big update for OS X yesterday as well.

The CPL calls it quits
Gaming
Written by t-readyroc
Friday, 14 March 2008

'Tis truly sad to see the original, the league that started it all, close its doors for good. I'm sure that upstarts like MLG & MTV's "Hip-Hop Gaming League" had a lot to do with this. The CPL just doesn't have the resources to compete with the likes of MTV.

"The CPL was launched in June 1997 with the pioneering mission of promoting and sanctioning video game competitions as a professional sport."

March Madness bandwidth rant
Editorials
Written by t-readyroc
Friday, 14 March 2008
2008 could be a trend-setting year with all of the games available for viewing. I dunno about this whole "lost productivity," or the bandwidth question though. I'd think that there wouldn't be nearly as many people into the whole March Madness thing if it weren't for the proliferation of the somehow-legalized betting plague known as "office pools." People who've not watched a single college hoops game all year are suddenly ravenous for information about a sport they probably couldn't recite a single rule for. You want to save on your bandwidth? Don't let your people post the bracket pools. It's really that simple. The number of people in an office who actually care about the teams involved are very likely greatly outnumbered by the people sucked into the marketing hooplah just to "check on their bracket."
