I just completed a write-up for class that summarizes a couple of articles on online mapping applications.  While doing my research, I found that while information on the subject was plentiful, the amount that was easily available was few & far between, so I'm posting it here in hopes that it may help someone in the future.  It's a quick overview of what goes into an online mapping application and a look at how companies are starting to ditch Google Maps in favor of open source alternatives like OpenLayers.

"Confirmation" of Source going to Linux at Phoronix
Rumors
Written by t-readyroc
Wednesday, 07 May 2008

The guys at Phoronix have some inside info that gives more credibility to the rumors that have been circulating. They don't go into the information, or (obviously) the source, so take it as you will, BUT... Phoronix does have a good track record with such things...

"Valve Software has yet to officially announce Linux clients for any of its software, but at Phoronix we have received information confirming that Valve is indeed porting its very popular Source engine to the Linux platform."

nForce 780a round up at HotHardware
Reviews

Wednesday, 07 May 2008

The nForce 780a reviews were fast & furious on the web yesterday, but the HotHardware guys got three to test against each other. See the daily reviews for a couple more.

"For the first time since the Phenom launch, AMD fans will now be able to pair up NVIDIA's flagship graphics configurations with an AMD CPU and exploit all of the features inherent to both."

Does SLi "hit a wall?" at the [H]
Reviews

Wednesday, 07 May 2008

The guys at the [H] take a look at running not one, not two, not three, not four, but all of the above 98xx series cards in a rig to see if SLi has a point of diminishing return. The one table that sums it all up for me is the power consumption. Insane.

"If you are looking for the absolute highest framerates, 3-way SLI will provide this, but it will not allow you to improve your gameplay experience in some games, so you are paying extra money for nothing unless you want the performance for canned benchmarks."

Will Duetsche Telekom buy Sprint?
Just News
Written by t-readyroc
Monday, 05 May 2008

If this deal goes through, Deutsche-Telekom will own both T-Mobile and Sprint, & would then be the largest mobile provider in the U.S. Crazy...

"Sprint Nextel's depressed share price may make a takeover seem attractive, but the deal would require massive investments to integrate different network technologies, he said."

Why are Blu-ray sales in the crapper? Ask Charlie
Interesting
Written by t-readyroc
Monday, 05 May 2008

Charlie over at the Inq goes through the reasons why he thinks that Blu-ray sales have not only failed to increase, but that you should avoid buying a Blu-ray player at all costs. I personally still think that flash media's going to be the distribution media of choice sooner rather than later...

"US consumers are still dumb sheep, but this time they are realizing what is being done to them and they aren't biting. Sony's hope of having 50% of disc sales this year be Blu-ray are more likely to happen because of falling DVD sales than rocketing Blu-ray."

nVidia nForce 780a SLi preview at Hexus
Previews
Written by t-readyroc
Monday, 05 May 2008

The guys at Hexus have already got their hands on an MSI nforce 780a SLi motherboard, the K9N2 Diamond. They give a quick run down of what 780a offers (hybrid SLi) along with plenty of shots of the K9N2 & its bundled PCIe 1x X-Fi sound solution.

"Though Hybrid Power only functions when compatible NVIDIA cards such as the GeForce 9600 GT or 9800 GX2 are in use, it allows users to save power by disabling any compatible discrete graphics cards when they're not required."

No Atoms for you!
Just News
Written by t-readyroc
Friday, 02 May 2008

Rough times for OEMs looking to build platforms around Intel's Atom chips. Methinks that ASUS will still be ok to hit their June launch for the next Eee PC, though.

"Due to the Atom processor shortage, Intel is expected to give priority to major vendors first while increasing the processor's price in 1000-unit tray quantities, according to sources at PC vendors."

New WHQLs for GeForce 6/7/8 on the way
Graphics Cards
Written by t-readyroc
Friday, 02 May 2008

Theo did some poking around & realized that yes, the current WHQL drivers from nVidia for the GeForce 6/7/8 series are indeed getting a bit long in the tooth (having been released last December for all OSs). Nvidia reps sent along some encouraging news, though:

"However, Nvidia told us that new drivers are on the way: Nvidia’s Chris Daniel told us that 'the drivers are going through WHQL as we speak. ETA is sometime next week.'"

Foxconn P45 and AMD 790GX sneak peeks
Previews
Written by t-readyroc
Friday, 02 May 2008

Some sneak peek shots of upcoming motherboards floating around the intarwebs today. First we've got shots of Foxconn's Quantum Force Avenger over at TweakTown. This will be Foxconns' enthusiast class P45-based motherboard, & is chock-full of goodies like easy access voltage measurement points.

The second sneaky-peek is over at Fudzilla, where they've snapped a shot of an AMD 790GX engineering sample. This will be the fastest IGP around when the boards hit the streets. The new boarsd will also bring AMD's newest SB750 southbridge to the table.

Expect to see both of these in early June. Computex, anyone?

HP rolling out 32 core Barcelona beast
Just News
Written by t-readyroc
Thursday, 01 May 2008

The guys at the Inq got an up-close look at HP's 8-socket, 32-core Barcelona-based monster. The thing's a beast, & may just give AMD something to live on until next year.

"Faced with the 'Beckton' 8-core MP Nehalems some five quarters from now, HP will still give a level playing field to both Intel and AMD in this high end space. Of course, it does assume smooth 'Shanghai', 'Montreal', 'Istanbul' and other major city delivery by AMD in the meantime."

Mainstream quad core shootout at Madshrimps
Reviews
Written by t-readyroc
Thursday, 01 May 2008

The Madshrimps guys pit a Q9300 against a Phenom 9850 to see which mainstream quad-core chip pwnz the hardest.

"Which one gives you more performance for the buck? Answering this question is not as straightforward as you might think."
