I just completed a write-up for class that summarizes a couple of articles on online mapping applications.  While doing my research, I found that while information on the subject was plentiful, the amount that was easily available was few & far between, so I'm posting it here in hopes that it may help someone in the future.  It's a quick overview of what goes into an online mapping application and a look at how companies are starting to ditch Google Maps in favor of open source alternatives like OpenLayers.

EA to produce G.I. Joe game
Gaming
Written by t-readyroc
Tuesday, 12 February 2008

The only part about this news that's keeping me from shouting "GO JOE!!" from the tree tops is the fact that EA's producing it. Time will tell, but I'm not hopeful.

"Hopefully, it won't just be relegated to mobile phones and Pogo.com, instead featuring billions of red lasers and blue lasers generating next-gen sparks, ultimately missing every single intended target."

Just News

Tuesday, 12 February 2008

Ouch. Started by an electrical short circuit, 'eh? I guess if you were holding out for LG's new LCD HDTVs, you might have to wait a while...

"The company published a Chinese-language press release that noted other LCD TV and monitor production lines were not involved in the fire and unaffected lines will be dispatched to cover the LCD monitor production lines, while related inventory should be able to partially satisfy customer demand for the next two months."

GPGPU's for more than just cracking passwords?
Interesting
Written by t-readyroc
Tuesday, 12 February 2008

Tarinder over at Hexus explains why those GPGPU thingers we've heard so little about to this point aren't garnishing the attention they deserve. His reasoning?

"Given the right kind of workload, which is inherently and ostensibly parallelisable, they can be programmed such that performance is significantly better than, say, running the same dataset on the CPU."

Seems that Phenoms don't heart them some Ubuntu so much... yet. The Phoronix guys have had some luck with the latest Hardy Heron build, & have posted some benchmark results.

"Fortunately though this support isn't stagnate and a better picture is painted when using the latest development builds of Ubuntu 8.04 'Hardy Heron' with the Linux 2.6.24 kernel."

Netflix dumps HD DVD
Just News

Monday, 11 February 2008

Although this is definitely big news in the HD disc format wars, I still don't think the "winner" will be fully decided anytime soon.

"Four out of six major Hollywood studios have recently decided to publish high-definition DVDs only using Blu-ray. Netflix said that with such a clear signal from the industry, it will only buy Blu-ray discs going forward and will phase out stock of HD DVD by about the end of the year."

Yahoo rekindling the AOL merger fire?

Monday, 11 February 2008

Now that Yahoo has officially turned down Microsoft, they're looking to shore up the company . The Google possibility has already been discussed, but I'd forgotten about AOL & Yahoo's previous attempt at web nirvana. They're keeping all options on the table...

"It said Yahoo and AOL had previously tried to join forces, but were unable to agree on the price of a deal."

nVidia's first mobile CPU
Just News

More mobile news today as nVidia rolls its first mobile CPU, which will incorporate a 750MHz ARM 11 core. The chip doesn't eat much juice while displaying 720p, either:

"The 65nm APX 2500 incorporates a 750 MHz ARM 11 with 256 Kbytes L2 cache, low-power graphics and video cores and an image processor supporting up to 12 Mpixel imaging. It dissipates about 200milliW decoding a 720p video stream, the company claims."

Sony Ericsson WinMo phone by year's end

Any guesses as to how this will sell? I'm thinking it'll be about as well-received as Palm's Treo 700w was initially. Good to not have all of your eggs in one basket, I suppose...

"Microsoft said that the Sony Ericsson device should be available to end users this year and that examples of it will be on display at the (Mobile World Congress) conference in Barcelona."

Guess this means I should've bought Yahoo shares when this announcement was made last week. Live & learn.

'Even though when Microsoft made its offer to buy Yahoo! it included a 62 per cent premium Yahoo! shareholders are now better off selling their shares on the open market."

I can't stop staring at these pics & just shaking my head in disbelief. Absolutely stunning.

 Amazing theater

"His Stewart Snowmatte laboratory-grade screen is the biggest I've ever seen in a home, and in the back of the theater, there's a Sony ultra-high-resolution (4,096-by-2,160) SRX-S110 digital projector. I'm looking everywhere, jotting down questions, and Kipnis sounds almost giddy talking about his theater's capabilities."

If you haven't seen it yet, your Firefox will pop up the ol' update window & proceed to do its thing.

"In this latest patch roll-up, Mozilla warned that three of the vulnerabilities could be used to run arbitrary code. This could include drive-by installations of bots, Trojans, spyware and other malicious executables."

Remember that box that they were trying to steal back from Ben Kingsley? Yeah, that's what I thought of as I read this article. Never thought I'd actually see the headline that someone made one... heh.

"The device generates random numbers at a data rate of 2.0 megabits a second, according to Toshiba in a paper presented at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) here."
