I just completed a write-up for class that summarizes a couple of articles on online mapping applications.  While doing my research, I found that while information on the subject was plentiful, the amount that was easily available was few & far between, so I'm posting it here in hopes that it may help someone in the future.  It's a quick overview of what goes into an online mapping application and a look at how companies are starting to ditch Google Maps in favor of open source alternatives like OpenLayers.

Sirius/XM deal over Justice Dept. hurdle - FCC up next
Just News
Written by t-readyroc
Tuesday, 25 March 2008

The deal's not done, but the Justice Department has given its blessing, so I'd imagine that wheels are turning over in the satellite radio camp. The merger now only needs FCC approval, & then it'll be one company to rule them all, as it were...

"Analysts expressed optimism of FCC approval, although some said the agency might impose conditions on the deal."

Mozilla's CEO not down with last week's Safari "update"
Just News

I'll admit that I was a bit miffed when the Apple Update screen in this article popped up on my desktop last week as well. I said to myself, "wait, do I actually have that installed?" John Lilly is just saying what's already been repeated ad nauseum on news comments, but I'd say his feelings carry a bit more clout, no?

" As such, claims Lilly, unsuspecting users are lead to install the browser when they might not be inclined to do so..."

Tuesday, 25 March 2008

In case you didn't notice it (I didn't), the Netflix site was down for a good while yesterday. Deliveries were delayed, but will go out today.

"The largest online video-rental service has suffered a technical glitch that has knocked out its Web site as well as its logistics and delivery systems, according to a Steve Swasey, a company spokesman."

Friday's gaming news

The Lost Planet: Colonies expansion pack sequel has been getting reamed for not actually being a new game, but it looks like it may offer something new: a first-person view. Interesting. Will this little tidbit make it worth the purchase price? Doubtful.

The Feds are going to be conducting WoW raids on "company time." Why? Because no one can think of a better use for your tax dollars? No, silly, to foil the terrorists, of course. Ya can't make this stuff up, I tell ya.

AMD to ship an HD3830?
Rumors
Written by t-readyroc
Friday, 21 March 2008

If the rumors pan out, looks like AMD's sticking with its bread-and-butter, & expanding the entry level/mid-range graphics lineup.

"The card will be positioned between AMD's Radeon HD 3850 and 3650 and will target the gap between Nvidia's GeForce 9600GT and 8600GTS with a price lower than US$129."

X Prize goes green
Just News

Friday, 21 March 2008

Looks like the X Prize Foundation is setting its sights on something a bit more down-to-earth (earth-y?). I think I'd like to see a good 100mpg car out of them than a new spacecraft, personally.

"The foundation billed the contest as independent and technology-neutral. It is open to teams from around the world that can design green vehicles that people want to buy and that meet market needs for price, size, capability, safety and performance."

Thursday, 20 March 2008

The Pwn2Own competition at this year's CanSecWest later this month will feature three different OSs on three different laptops, & whoever executes code remotely first on each laptop gets to take the laptops home. Which OS will fall first?

"This year's Pwn2Own competition will place three brand-new, fully patched laptops side by side: a Fujitsu U810 running Vista Ultimate, a Vaio VGN-TZ37Cn running Ubuntu 7.10 and a MacBook Air running Leopard."

The auction ended yesterday and a total of nearly $20 billion was raised. The winner(s) of the C block of the 700MHz spectrum won with a bid just shy of $5 billion, but are still unknown at this time.

"The C block spectrum includes a requirement sought by Internet leader Google Inc that would make it accessible to any device or software application."

Why buy an add-in sound card? at TechwareLabs
Interesting
Written by t-readyroc
Thursday, 20 March 2008

The TechwareLabs guys do a specs comparison between a decent on-board sound solution and an ASUS Xonar card. They go through the reasoning behind the comparison, & the meaning of the specs. It's a decent write-up that should give anyone thinking about an add-in card some thoughts to mull over.

"With the widespread availability of onboard sound why would a consumer select an add-on sound card to their system?"

The guys at ThinkComputers are giving away an NZXT Tempest case with a ton of airflow options to a lucky registered forum member You have to have at least 40 forums posts, so this one's not likely for the newbies unless you plan to spend the next three weeks posting ;-) Sweet case though.
