I just completed a write-up for class that summarizes a couple of articles on online mapping applications.  While doing my research, I found that while information on the subject was plentiful, the amount that was easily available was few & far between, so I'm posting it here in hopes that it may help someone in the future.  It's a quick overview of what goes into an online mapping application and a look at how companies are starting to ditch Google Maps in favor of open source alternatives like OpenLayers.

Adblock plus updated

Adblockplus.org has updated their Firefox extension for the first time in nearly 200 days. The update improves compatibility with Firefox 3, among other things, and brings the current version up to 0.7.5.4.

"Note that while Firefox 1.5, Thunderbird 1.5 and SeaMonkey 1.0 are still supported, these applications receive less testing and it is recommended to upgrade to at least Firefox 2.0, Thunderbird 2.0 or SeaMonkey 1.1. Support for older versions will likely be dropped in a few months."

VIA and nVidia to smash the Intel Atom?
CPU/Chipset
Written by t-readyroc
Thursday, 10 April 2008

Looks like VIA & nVidia are teaming up to give Intel some competition to its latest Atom processor. Wonder why we get this news a day after VIA announced it wouldn't be going to Computex? Maybe they'll be sharing some booth space with the green guys?

"Dodgy particle physics metaphors aside, the deal - motherboard makers moles allege - is about competing more effectively with Intel's Atom and Centrino Atom products, respectively aimed at sub-notebooks and handheld internet devices."

Opera announces mini-browser for Android

Opera's already on the Android bandwagon. Of course, it would have been silly to not expect this announcement, but it is refreshing to see it this early in the game.

"Today’s technical preview release is available at labs.opera.com, inviting the Android development community to test the fresh build and share feedback with Opera for the forthcoming beta."

Adobe updates Flash; releases Media Player
Just News

Thursday, 10 April 2008

Adobe was fairly quick to fix the flaw that allowed the winner of the Pwn2Own contest to hack the Macbook this year. The update addresses 7 vulnerabilities in the player, and brings the current version up to 9.0.124.0.

Adobe hasn't just been busy with Flash, though. They've also just launched Media Player, which is built on the AIR framework. Media Player is seen as a competitor to Joost, and focuses on online playback of TV clips and shows. What with Joost and recently Hulu, the market's getting crowded, ain't it?

Intel's initial G45/43 chips to be quickly replaced by faster silicon
CPU/Chipset
Written by t-readyroc
Wednesday, 09 April 2008

According to ExpReview, the silicon that's already sampled from Intel, A2, will be a bit slower and not have VC-1 hardware decoding. This means that the first G45/43 chipsets to ship will be quickly replaced by faster chips with more functionality. Big OEMs can't be happy about that.

"The developing of the graphic driver is not satisfying, because in the launch day the driver will only support OpenGL 1.5, OpenGL 2.0 still unsupported. you have to wait till Q3 for a new driver release."

VIA and SiS skipping Computex this year

Well, I can't say I'm surprised. With no really new products to showcase, and no recent performance coups to speak of, I'd say it's probably smart to tighten the belt and focus on what you do have.

"VIA is also being impacted by limited personnel and material resources, and foresees limited benefit from participating in the trade show. Additionally, the company will postpone organizing its own VIA Technology Forum (VTF) event to a later time."

Posh Suicide

Looks like Posh Suicide's not only a gamer, she's apparently played Portal as well. I still can't get the intro clip to play, and you have to be a member to see the photo set, but I thought the gaming reference was enough to post this ;-)

First roundup is from the roundup kings themselves. The Madshrimps take 7 notebook coolers to task to see which does the best job. I've always wondered about getting a notebook cooler.... hmmm... The second roundup is from BenchmarkReviews, who include a total of 14 different CPU coolers in their Q1 '08 roundup.

Nothing like domain name prospecting. All this guy did was register a domain fourteen years ago, & blam: millionaire. Yes, I'm jealous.

"Clark had some small success with the name, based on a pizza delivery and advertising site he started with a friend. When they quickly turned the profit corner with that business, Clark started thinking about selling the domain name."

JavaSE 1.4 gets support reprieve
Just News
Written by t-readyroc
Monday, 07 April 2008

Sun is now staying the executioner's axe by another ten years for the 1.4 version of JavaSE. 1.4 is the now ancient version of Java from the era before Sun simply ditched the "1." from the beginning of the nomenclature. I can think of a couple of programs (SAS being the most notable) that still require 1.4.x and will install it if it doesn't find it in your system; so I suppose the support extension is important in that respect.

"This is for paying customers only. Others must upgrade to the latest edition of Java SE, with free support slashed from six to three years - or fend for themselves using Sun's OpenJDK."

Ballmer pushes Microsoft - Yahoo deal into hostile takeover territory
Just News
Written by t-readyroc
Monday, 07 April 2008

The Yahoo/Microsoft deal is getting interesting. It seems that MS is getting forceful with its "offer" to buy the search giant, and has threatened to bypass Yahoo's board in the process. Does this mean that an MS purchase of Yahoo is now inevitable? Would the Yahoo brand/services live on after such an acquisition? Crazy to imagine a web without it...

"But, in so many words, Balmer also smugly concluded that resistance was futile and that, not only would they end up taking over Yahoo, but that Yahoo shareholders might well be more than a little peeved at the fact the company had turned down a pretty good deal at the get go, resulting in months of unhelpful stalling."
