Travis Burrell

Travis (AKA t-readyroc) earned his BA in Biology from Saint Mary’s College, MD back in 1998 where he started tinkering with computers. He worked in chemical instrumentation for a few years and then moved into IT full-time in 2003. He’s currently the distance education coordinator and webmaster for the University of Maryland.

Travis has been with GeekExtreme since early 2004. His continued dedication to reporting the geekiest of geek news is probably why we’re still here. We really couldn’t do this without him.

Android rootkit demonstrated

At Defcon. As the researchers demonstrated in their talk, this gives the attacker access to the Android phone’s SQLite database, allowing them to view, for example, a victim’s texts or contacts. It’s also possible to remotely read the device’s current GPS coordinates and to make outgoing calls without this being shown on the display.

I knew it was a bit of a crap-shoot with my twenty-some add-ons, but I was genuinely surprised to see that Lightning no longer [...]

Pulling an SD: Brink Delayed

Anyone who anticipated the release of ET:QW will know that this bit of news from developers Splash Damage is par for the course.  Fall it is, then! S.T.A.L.K.E.R. DirectX compare-o

The ExpReview crew have run the S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat benchmark on a rig in both DirectX modes to point out that differences do indeed exist.  The shadows look a bit more realistic, and the tessellation in DX11 brings a bit more details to some of the textures.  There’s a slight performance hit for the [...]
